Definitions
- My invention relates to an improved method of preparing photographic paper; and it consists, essentially, in providing it with a'lined or stippled surface by printing or other suitable means in order to give the picture produced upon it the appearance of a steel engraving, as will be more fully described hereafter;
- the paper may be prepared in two ways. Either a plate of glass may be taken, which is covered with an engravers etching-ground, and then passed under a steel-engravin g machine, so as to rule and rulette its surface, and from-which the paper upon which the photograph is to be taken is printed in the usual manner, so as to give the paper a lined or stippled surface, on which the picture is printed from the negative; or a steel plate, instead of glass, may be taken, from which, after it has been passed under the steel-engravin g machine, the paper is printed so as to give it the desired lined or stippled surface. After the paper has been thus printed it is covered with albumen or similar organic substance, and thus made ready for the market.

Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THOMAS DONEY, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PHQTOGRAPl-IIC PAPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,210, dated October 27, 1874; application filed December 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS DoNEY, of E1- gin, Kane county, State of Illinois have invented an Improvement in the Art of Producing Doneys Photo-Engraving, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved method of preparing photographic paper; and it consists, essentially, in providing it with a'lined or stippled surface by printing or other suitable means in order to give the picture produced upon it the appearance of a steel engraving, as will be more fully described hereafter;
The paper may be prepared in two ways.
Not only does paper having this lined and stippled surface, and prepared in the manner described, impart a more beautiful appearance to the picture, but it saves much time and labor spent in retouching the negative.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- As a new article of manufacture, photographic paper having a lined or stippled surface imprinted thereon, and provided with an albumenized coating over the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THOS. DONEY. Witnesses:
JOHN G. KRIBS, ALFRED HALLECK.
