Description

CARL BARTHOLOMAE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED COMPOSITION FOR GOLD-SIZE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,488, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL BARTHOLOMAE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Compound for Gold-Size; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to acomposition which is intended to take the place of the varnish or size generally used in printing such parts of wall-paper or of fancy paper which are to appear in gold color.
My compound is made of water, soda, rosin, and shellac, to which a portion of glue and of boiled oil are added, the Whole being mixed together in about the following proportions: Water, sixty-four parts, by weight; soda,.two parts; rosin, eight parts; shellac, one and three-fourth part; glue, dissolved, one part; boiled oil, two parts. The soda, rosin, and shellac are first boiled in water for about four hours, so as to form a kind of soap. To this soap is added the requisite quantity of glue dissolved in water, and the whole is mixed with boiled oil in about the proportion above stated.
By the addition of the glue my composition is rendered capable of drying in a comparatively short time. It can be used on paper which is not sized, and it allows of printing over it without blotting.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The use of glue in a composition for goldsizing, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A composition made of the ingredients above specified and mixed together, substantiallly as and for the purpose set forth.
, 0L. BARTHOLOMAE.
