INVENTOI? LEO B. CRABBS, OF KANSAS .CITY, MISSOURI.
ENenAvInG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed February 6, 1914. Serial No. 816,974.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO B. CRABBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Engravings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates ,to engravings, and more particularly to that class of engravings comprising monograms, initials, or the like, or to engravings consisting of one or more entire words; the principal object of the invention being to provide fonts of engravings, the individual members of which may be assembled to form the subject matter of the engraving, and so arranged that the assembly lines may not be detected on the printed card or sheet. In accomplishing this object I have provided improved details of structure, thepreferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a number of independent engraved members assembled for use in printing initials, and showing the mounting of the members on a chuck block. Fig. II is a detail perspective view of one of the engraved members. Fig. III is a cross-section of a number of assembled members.
Referring more in detail to the parts v 1 designates the individual engraved members, each of which is formed from a piece of suitable material, having a letter, or the like, engraved in one of its faces. Each of the members 1 has adove-tailed groove 3 at one longitudinal edge and a dove-tailed rail 4 at the opposite longitudinal edge. The grooves and rails of all of the individual engraved members in each set or font are alike and adapted for close locking cooperation in order that the edges of the engraved faces may fit closely and snugly to prevent ink from entering therebetween.
In using the invention, presuming the possession of a font or set of engraved members of the character described, when it is desired to print a card or sheet by the engraved method, the proper character members l are selected and assembled by establishing the dove-tailed slot and rail connection therebetween, with the engraved characters in the proper sequence. The assembled members 1 are then secured to an ordinary chuck block, or the like, and the engraving process performed in the usual manner. After the printing has been completed, the engraved members are removed from the chuck block and disconnected by sliding the members from each other over the dove-tailed joints and the individual members returned to their proper cases for use at a future time.
It is apparent that by providing the font of engraved members a great many combi-x nations may be arranged quickly and without the necessity of engraving the steel or other base for each individual order for engraved work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
The combination of individual character blocks, each block having an undercut groove on one side thereof and a tongue on the other side thereof, said grooves and tongues adapted to bring and hold the separate blocks in close engagement so that the surfaces on which the engravings are made may be continuous.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. LEO B. CRABBS.
