DESIGN FOR A RUBBER BOOT OR SHOE.
JPHCIPICATION forming part of Design No. 16.645. dated April 20,1886.
Applinalinirfiled Fi-hrnar 16. [$50.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK \l. SHEP- ARD, of the township of East Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Rubber Boots and Shoes, which design is fully set forth in the following specification.
The object of the design is to ornament the uppers of rubber boots and shoes by prodne ing an effect similar to a toe-cap.
The design consists in a raised band or strip extending from the edge of the sole near the toe on one side of the shoe across the up per to the other edgeof the sole, the said band or strip being about half an inchin width and being ornamented in any suitable way, as by a row of depressions or project ions by a vine or bead in the center thereof, or otherwise.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a partof this specification, Figures 1 and 2 rep resent in plan the toe part of a rubber boot having the design applied thereto.
The band or strip a extends across the shoe A a proper distance from the toe and meets the sole on each side. The ornamentation of this band may be varied within wide limits. As shown in Fig. 1, two parallel ridges extend Serial Nu. l9), 1 (iii.

along each edge of the band or strip, which runs in a direct line across the toe, while the middle portion is ornamented with a line or row of dots, b. The edges need not be straight, and the band or strip, instead of extending in a direct line, may be curved, as represented in Fig. 2, wherein the middle portion of the strip is shown as ornamented by a rimlikc tracing, which may of course be either raised or sunk, as preferred. These illnstrationsare deemed sufficient to explain the nature of the design, and the manner in which it may be modified without changing its essential features.
I claim- The within-described design for rubber boots and shoes, consisting of the single narrow raised band crossing the upper near the toe and meeting the sole on either side, said band being suitably ornamented, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK M. SHEPARD.
