DESIGN FOR A COFFlN-PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 13,967, dated June 5, 1883.

To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we, ELI H.ELDR1DGE and JOHN H. ELDRIDGE, of Tauntonfln the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a. new and [m proved Design for Coi fin-Plates; and we do hereby declare the following to he a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, refelence being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and to the tignrcs and letters of reference marked thereon.
Onr invention relates ton-n improved design for the plates which are placed upon the fronts or other suitable iaortionsoi' coflins to bear the name of the deceased and accompanying inscriptions. Such coflin-plates have heretofore been made in various shapes,with inscriptiow surfaces surrounded by plain or ornamental borders, and sometimes without borders. The object of our invention is to give the c0iiin-platcs an ornamental and at the some time a significant character independent of the special inscriptions.
Our invention consists in adesign for coflinplates in which the front surlace ot' the plate is divided into two sections, one being blank and plain and the other containing emblematical figures or representations embossed, engraved, or otherwise plnced thereon.
The accompanying drawing represents a coffin-plate designed according to our improvement.
The letter A designates the plate as a whole. B is its blank section to receive inscriptions, and O is its cinblematical section. In the present instance the upper edge of the plate is given a somewhat arched form, and has n. scroll-work border, (I. The embletnatical section is divided from the plain section by a scalloped or undulating head, 6. Within the emblcinatical section are arranged various fignres or groups of figures, as shown at fg h i j k l, having einbleinaticztl signilicstion.
What we claim is- 1. The design for cofiin-plates herein described, the same consisting in the front surlace, divided into sections. one of which is blank, and the other of which contains enthletnatical figures or representations,substantially as described and shown.
2. The herein-described design lor coflinplates, consisting of the surface divided into two sections, one of which is plain and blank, and the other of which contains enibleinatical figures. the upper edge of the plate having a scroll-not k border, substantially as described and shown.
