R. MILLER. Bank Check.
No. 12,076. Patented Dec'. 2|, 1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ItEUBEN MILLER,
WILLIAM METOALF,
OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF,
AND OIIARLES PARKIN, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A BANK-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of D esign No. 12,076, dated December 21, 1880.
Application filed September 24, 19580. Turm of patent I4 years To all whom @t may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN MILLER, of Pittsburg', county ot' Allegheny, State of Penusylrania, have invented or produced a new 5 and original Design for Bank-Checks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdraw ing, making a part ot' this specication, which Io illustrates my improved design for bankchecks.
The leading features ot' this design consist, lirst, in the arrangement of the name of the bank on which the check is drawn with relation to the blanks for name of payee and the amount to be paid; and, second, in the manner ot' printing at the upper lefthand corner of the check the name or other proprietary mark of the maker ol' the check.
The face of the check, as represented inthe drawing, is ruled or spaced in four horizontal lines ot' blanks, the upper blanks, a a', being for number and date respectively, the next lower, I), being for the name of the payee, z5 the third line, c, being for the amount to be paid, andthe fourth (divided) line, d d', being for the amount of the check in numerals and for the signature ot' the maker ot' the check.. The arrangement thus far specied is that 3o which is in ordinary use on bankchecks, ex-
cept that no space or line is especially set apart for the name of 4the bank on which the check is drawn.
To illustrate this part ot' the design I have assumed the check to be drawn on The Bank of Pittsburg, and the letters composing such name are arranged in a reliex or double-curve line, beginning at or near the left hand of blank c (the blank for the amount of the check) 4o and extending in curved line, as stated, upward across and more or less along and over the blank b, (the blank for the naine of the payee.) These letters are,by preference, o'eomparatively large size, or capitals, and printed ortinted with ink of light color, so that words or symbols written over them in ordinary writing-ink may be legible. This arrangement of the name of the bank gives to the check a disU tinctive and neat appearance, which is its main purpose.
At the upper left-hand corner I arrange another distinguishing feature of this check, consisting in its main features of a dark shaded or clouded ground, e, representing a radiation ot' light, and across the face of such ground is 55 printed on a scroll, c', in white letters or in intaglio, the name of the maker or drawer of the cheek, which in this case I have assumed to be the lirm of Millen Metcalf 85 Parkin, and also such other words of place or direc- 6o tion, or symbols `i and mouograms t', as may serve to indicate to the eye the source of the check or the person or tirm by whom it is made, and at the same time be a distinguishing mark or feature by which this particular design of check may be readily recognized.
I claim as my inventionllhe design for bank-check herein shown and described, the same consisting of the arrangement ot' the name of the bank on which the 7o check is drawn in a reliex or double curve line crossing and partially covering the blanks designed for the name ot' the payee and the amount to be paid, the letters composing the name of such bank heilig ol' large size and 75 printed or shaded with light-colored ink, in combination or connection with a shaded or clouded ground at the upper left-hand corner of the check, across which is printed in white the name or other proprietary mark, or both, 8o of the maker ofthe check, as shown and described.
In testimony whercot I have hereunto set my hand.
REUBEN MILLER. Witnesses WM. LrrfrLE, C. L. PARKER.
