COMBINATICN CHECK, RECEIPT, AND RECORD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1921.
Application led April 15, 1918. Serial No. 228,573.
To aZZfwwm it ma concern.'
Beit known t at I, ARTHUR V. FRY, a citizen `oi? the United States, residing at Ridgewood, Bergen county, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in Combination Checks, Receipts, and Records, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combination check, receipt and record, and has for one of its objects to provide a device o `this character by the use of which business transactions may be carried out in an eilicient manner and without liability of error.
Further, the invention has for its object to provide a device of this character in which the check, receipt and record, apper-v taining to a business transaction, are prepared simultaneously.
Further, the invention has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a check, a receipt and a record foldably secured to one another and adapted to be arranged with the check superimposed upon the receipt and the record whereby an impression of the `matter written upon the check will be received upon the receipt and the record.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in art be pointed `out hereinafter.
o the attainment of the aforesaid ob jects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and Vthen pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a face view of one form of a combined check, receipt `and record, constructed according to and embodying my invention; Y f y Fig. 2 is a view showing the oldable parts in extended position;` .Figc 3 is a reverse view of the parts as shown in Fig. 2, and
Fig.` 4 is an edge View showing the parts folded.
In carrying `out business transactions, especially in connection with the sale of stocks, it frequently happens that a messenger 1s sent from the ollice of the payee to the oliice of the payer for the purpose of obtaining a check due the payee. According to the usual words Shares ing assumed that the check is to be drawn practice the check is handed to the messenger by a clerk at the payers ollice, but no receipt for the check is presented to the messenger for him to sign, as, in an oliice dolng an extensive business it is not possible to write a separate receipt for each check that is issued. If, as frequently happens, the messenger, for some reason, fails to deliver the check to the payee, the payer is notiiied of such fact and the responsibility for the non-delivery of the check rests upon the payer, who, by reason of the volume of his business is, of course, unable to remember each and every check which has been paid out. Further, in the usual system in which the data of the transaction for which the check is made out is written upon the stub of the check, it frequently happens that there is a discrepancy between such data Written on the stub and the matter written upon the check, which discrepancy causes considerable trouble when the payers check book is balanced with the records of the bank. The rincipal object of this invention is to provi e a combination check, receipt and record by means of which the troubles above referred to are overcome ina convenient and expeditious manner.
Referring to the drawing 10 indicates the check which is divided into right and left hand portions 11 and 12 respectively. The ripht hand portion 11 of the check 1() is provi ed with a plurality of suitably arranged blankspaces 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, of which the space 13 is adapted to have written thereon the date that the check is issued, the space 14 is ,adapted to receive the name of the payee, the Spaces 15 and 16 are adapted to receive the amount of thecheck in numerals ,and words, respectively, and the space 17 is adapted to receive the slgnature of the payee.
The number of the check 10 is printed upon the portion 11 thereof, as indicated at 18.
The left hand portion ol the check 10,
which is integral with the right hand por- Qtion 11 thereof, is suitably adapted to have tion shown for illustrative purposes, the
portion 12 is provided with three spaces 19, 20, a-nd 21, designated respectively by the Stock, and Price, it beto cover a transaction involving the sale of shares of stock.
The face of the check may have printed thereon any suitable printed matter, such as is shown, for example, in the drawing.
Detachably secured tothe left hand end of the check, and adapted to be folded either over or underthe same, is a receipt 22 upon which is printed, as i-ndicated at 23, the number corresponding to the number of the check 10. The receipt 22 is of substantially the same dimensions as the left hand portion 12 ofthe check 10, and is provided with spaces 24, 25 and 26, which are designated by the words Shares, Stock and Price, and which, when the receipt 22 is folded under the check 10, register with the corresponding spaces 19, 20, and 21 on the left hand portion 12 thereof. The receipt is also provided with one or more spaces 27 to receive the signature of the person to whom the'check 10 is delivered.
A t'its right hand end, the check 10 is detachably secured to one end of the record 28 and is adapted to be superimposed thereon, the record 28 corresponding in its dimensions to the dimensions of the check 10. Printed upon the record 28, as indicated at 29, is the same number which is printed upon the check lOrand receipt 22, as indicated at 18 and 23 respectively. V'The record is provided with blank spaces corresponding to and arranged to register with the blank spaces on the check 10. The blank spaces on the record 2,8,V registering' with the blank spaces 19, 2O and '21 on 'the left hand portion 12 of the check 10, will also bein register with the blank spaces 24, 25 and 26 on the receipt 22, and are simultaneously designated.
'At its left hand end the record 28 is preferably provided with an integral extended portion.l 30' to permit a number of the dev vices to be'bound in book form, either permanently or detachably.
' In use, the check 10 is foldedover the record '28', the receipt 22 is folded to lie between 'the check 10 and the record 28, and sheets of carbon paper or the like are interposed betweenl Ythe folded portions of the The check 10 is then made out and signed in the usual manner, the data as t0 the number of shares, the name of the stock and price thereof per share, being inserted in the blanks 19, 20 and 21 on the left hand portion 12 thereof. Simultaneously with the making out of the check 10, the record 28 will receive an impression of all of the matter written thereon, and the receipt 22 will receive an impression of so much of the written matter as is received upon the left hand portion 12 of the check 10. The checklO, with the receipt 22 attached thereto, may then bedetached from the record 28. WVhen the check 10 is called for by a messenger, the receipt 22 is detached therefrom by a clerk and handed to the messenger, who signs the same in the blank spaces vnecessary for him to ascertain from his books the number of the check in question and then obtain from his file the signed receipt bearing the same number, thus proving that the check was received by the messenger. In this way the responsibility for the non-delivery of the check falls upon the messenger and not upon the payer.
Having thus described my said invention what I claim and desi-re to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising a plurality of members, one of said members having a plurality of portions, each of which is provided with spaces adapted to receive written data relating to a business transaction, another of said members positioned below said rst-named member and (zo-extensive in size therewith, said second-named member being provided with spaces corresponding to and registering with the spaces on both portions of said first-named member, whereby said secondnamed member is adapted to receive an imprint of all of the data written on said firstnamed member, and another of said members being positioned below said firstnamed member and co-extensive in size with one only of the portions thereof, said thirdnamed member being provided with spaces registering with the spaces on said one portion only of said first-named member, whereby said third-named member is adapted to receive an imprint of the data written on said one portion only of said firstnamed member, substantially as specified.
2. A device of the character described comprising a voucher check, a record blank, and a receipt blank, said voucher check having a voucher portion and a check portion, each of which is provided with spaces to receive written data relating to a business transaction, said record blank positioned below and coextensive in size with said voucher check, said record blank being provided with spaces registering with the spaces on said voucher check, whereby it is adapted to receive an imprint of all the data written on said voucher check, said receipt blank positioned below and coextensive m size with the voucher portion of said voucher check, said receipt blank being provided with spaces registering with the spaces on said voucher portion, whereby it is adapted to receive an imprint of only the data written on said voucher portion, substantially as specied.
3. A device of the character described comprising aJ voucher check, a record blank, and a recelpt blank, said voucher check having :i voucher portion and a. check portion, each of which is provided with spaces to receive written data relating to a business transaction, said record blank positioned below and co-extensive in size with said voucher check, and foldably attached to one end thereof, said record blank bein provided with spaces registering Wit the spaces on said voucher check, whereby it is adapted to receive an imprint of all the date, written on said voucher check, said re ceipt blank positioned below and co-extensive in size with the voucher portion of said voucher check, and oldably secured to the other end thereof, said receipt blank being provided with spaces registering with the spaces on said voucher portion, whereby it is adapted to receive an imprint of only the data written on said voucher portion, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this second day. of March, one thousand nine hundred 25 and eighteen.
