This invention relates to a manifolding set and more particularly to an improved check and voucher arrangement.
It is an object of this invention to provide a new and convenient check and voucher arrangement.
It is a further object of this invention to provide means for obtaining a record of the essential data upon the making of a check.
It is a further object of this invention to provide check vouchers readily adapted for accounting of expenditures made by check.
It is a still further object of this invention to provide a unitary check and voucher easily and simply made.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description. In accordance with the illustrated embodiments, the present invention consists of a check provided with a voucher to receive in duplicate the payee, date and amount of check. The check is of the usual rectangular form and the designated areas for the above-mentioned data are included within approximately the upper longitudinal half of the check. This data is transferred to the voucher by means of a transfer sheet having a pressure-sensitive transfer surface thereon interposed between the check and the voucher. In cooperation with the space for receiving the amount of the check, indicia and space are provided on the voucher for computing the balance of the account upon which the check is drawn. In the lower longitudinal half of the voucher a record column is imprinted extending longitudinally of the voucher. A list of items including the most likely items for which expenditures are made is imprinted in the column with space adjacent each item for distributing the expenditure made by a check to the proper account or accounts. The side edge of the voucher lying at the top of the record column has a series of perforations adapting the voucher for use with the peg book which forms the subject of applicants copending application, Serial No. 248,235, filed September 25, 1951, now U. S. Patent No. 2,635,608, issued April 21, 1953.
This peg book is provided with a long, straight row of pegs spaced at the same intervals as the perforations in the side edge of the voucher. At the end of each month or other selected accounting period the vouchers accumulated in that period are shingled on this row of pegs with only the figures in the record column exposed. The horizontal rows of figures are then totaled and entry is made in a summary sheet placed on the peg book below the vouchers. A check, its voucher and its transfer sheet are made up from a single sheet of paper by suitably preparing selected portions of a sheet to conform to one of the desired items and folding the sheet so that the check portion lies superposed the voucher portion of the sheet with the portion forming the transfer sheet lying between them. Lines of separation are provided through the sheet so that the portions may be separated from one another. For convenience in handling, a number of the folded sheets can be bound together to form a checkbook.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the check and voucher arrangement of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a View in perspective of a checkbook with the check and vouchers of the present invention assembled therein, the uppermost unit of which is opened up to show a preferred arrangement of this invention; Fig. 3 is a plan View of the voucher of this invention; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a number of vouchers of this invention arranged for the accounting of expenditures recorded on the vouchers; Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of a modified form of the present invention; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of an adaptation of the check and voucher illustrated in Fig. 1 partly opened to show the arrangement of various parts; and Fig. 7 is a plan view of a detail of Fig. 6.
Referring now to the drawings, there is pictured in Fig. 1 a voucher l I which has superposed thereon a check 10 with a transfer sheet i2 interposed between the check and the voucher. Check it is provided with the usual indicia thereon as shown in Fig. 2. For the purposes of the present invention it is preferable that the designated space for the date, the payee and the numerical figures of the amount of the check be located on the upper longitudinal portion of the check as shown in Fig. 2.
The voucher ll pictured in Fig. 3 has desig nated space thereon for receiving an impression of the date, the payee of the check and the numerical figures of the amount. These areas are located on the voucher so that they will be in register with the pertinent areas of the superposed'check. Additional indicia is provided on the voucher for computing the balance of the account, there being provided space for the balance brought forward from the preceding check, deposits, and summarizing space in cooperation with the area which will contain an impression of the numerical amount of the check. In the lower portion of thevoucher there is imprinted thereon a record column l3 having one portion thereof devoted to a list I4 of items for which expenditures are most frequently made, and a further portion of the column is provided with spaces l5 for recording therein the amount of the check against the item for which the expenditure is made. A few blank spaces 16 are provided in the column for writing in expenditures for unusual items not included in the imprinted list. The side edge of the voucher ii which lies at the top of the record column i3 is provided with a series of perforations H, the purpose for which will be more fully explained subsequently.
To obtain an impression of the payee, date and the numerical amount of the check on the voucher, the transfer sheet [2 is provided with a pressure-sensitive transfer medium it such as a carbonized layer or the like on the surface of the transfer sheet which will lie adjacent the voucher. The transfer medium 18 is distributed over sheet l2 so that it will lie under only the pertinent portion of the check whereby incidental data such as the written amount of the check and the makerwill not be impressed upon the voucher, such information not being necessary for most record-keeping purposes and especially for the ends of this invention.
The arrangement of the various portions allow for convenient preparation from a single sheet of paper of the check, voucher and transfer sheet by preparing suitable portions thereof in a required manner and folding the sheet as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, that is, along line It dividing the, check and voucher and along line 20 dividing the check and transfer sheet. To facilitate separation of the various portions from one another, a line of severance 2| is provided along fold line I9 and a line of severance 221s provided along fold line 20. The individual sheets are conveniently prepared for binding a plurality in a check book form depicted in Fig. 2 by leaving abase portion 23 extending from voucher II and securing a plurality of sheets together with rings 24 through the base portion 23. A
line of severance 25 is provided through the sheet along a line separating the base portion of the voucher so that the voucher may be detached from the bound base portion. I
The check of this invention is made out in the usual manner and as indicated above an impression is obtained on the voucher of the payee, the date and the amount of the check. After making out the check, the transfer portion I2 is detached from the check Ill and the check detached from the voucher ll, allowing the check to be distributed in the usual form. The amount of the check appearing on the face of the voucher can then be distributed to the items in record column l3 for which the expenditure made by the check should be attributed. After distribution of the expenditures and detaching it from the base, the voucheris adapted to be assembled with a number of other vouchers representing various expenditures for ready accounting. This feature is best illustrated in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 4, numeral 2'! designates a leaf of an accounting peg book which forms the subject matter of my copending application, supra. Leaf 21 is provided with a number of upstanding pegs 28 along the top edge vthereof with a summary sheet 29 leaved upon pegs 28 in the manner shown. Sheet 29 contains monthly summary columns such as 30 and 3 I for each month of the year, a total summary column for the year (not shown), and a list of items 32 corresponding to list H: on voucher I l. Each month the vouchers for the checks written that month are shingled in the manner shown, that is, with the first laid down immediately to the left of the monthly column to be filled in and each succeeding voucher leaved upon the next with only the amount figures in column l5 of each voucher showing. The expenditures for each month can then be totaled by adding the horizontal item columns and recording in the monthly column the total expended that month for the particular item.
Fig. 5 illustrates another embodiment of the present invention. The check book illustrated therein is made up of a plurality of sheets bound with staples 41. Each of the individual sheets includes a top transfer section 52, a central voucher section 43 and a bottom check section 44. As is shown, the sheet is folded along a line 46 parallel to the top edge so that the transfer section 42 lies superposed of a portion of the voucher 43. The staples 4| pass through the folded sheet in close proximity to the fold line 46. A line of severance 4! is provided through the sheet so that the top section may be detached from the bound portion of the sheet and a line of severance 48 is provided so that voucher :33 may be separated from the bound portion. The sheet is further folded along line it whereby the check section 44 lies superposed of the voucher 43 with the transfer section 42 interleaved between the check and the voucher with a line of severance 59 provided through the sheet along the fold line 49 whereby the check may be detached from the voucher. As illustrated, suitable indicia is provided on the face of the check.
The voucher 43 is imprinted in the manner of the voucher ll illustrated in Fig. 3. To secure an impression of the payee, date and amount of the check on the voucher, the transfer section Q2 is provided with a pressure-sensitive transfer medium 5| such as a carboned surface or the like on the surface which lies adjacent to the voucher over the portion underlying the pertinent parts of check 44. The manner of using this form of the invention is substantially the same as previously explained; and, of course, the voucher is preferably supplied with a perforated side edge so that it may be utilized with the peg book of copending application, supra.
In another modification of the present invention the record column may be imprinted on the reverse side of the voucher and the entire face of the voucher devoted to receiving a duplicate of the check. Also, indicia may be provided on the reverse side of the voucher for noting cash receipts and expenditures.
In Fig. 6 is illustratedthe manifolding check and voucher of this invention in a form adapted for business uses. For convenience and clarity the assembly is shown in a partially unfolded condition. As shown therein a rectangular paper sheet 60 is provided with a line "of severance 6t extending across the sheet parallel to one side edge thereof and dividing the sheet into major and minor portions. The sheet isfurther divided into a duplicate section 62,'an original section 63 and a transfer section 64, each extending across the sheet normal to the line of severance El. As shown, the individual sections are so located and the sheet folded whereby. the original section 53 liespsuperposed the duplicate section 62 with the transfer section 64 interleafed between the original and duplicate sections.
The major portion ofthe original section is provided with check indicia, preferably with the designated space for the date, the payee; and the numerical figures of the amount located within the upper longitudinal portion of the check, as shown in Fig. 6. The minor portion H of the original section is imprinted as a payroll tab with appropriate indicia for indicating such items as withholding tax, social security, and other deductions, and such other indicia as is.deemed appropriate for the particular enterprise for which payment is being made.
The arrangement of the duplicate section 52 is best shown in Fig. 7. As shown therein, the major portion 15 of the duplicate section is arranged as a voucher ll illustrated in Fig. 3. The upper longitudinal portion of major portion 15 is provided with designated space in registry with the corresponding spaces of the check for receiving an impression of the date, the payee of the check, and the numerical figures of the amount. Additional indicia is also provided for computing the balance of the account, there being provided space for the balance brought forward from the preceding voucher, deposits, and summarizing space incorporated with the area which will contain an impression of the numerical amount of the check. In the lower portion of the voucher there is imprinted a record column l6 having one section thereof devoted to a list of items 71, for which expenditures are most frequently made, and a further section of the col umn provided with spaces 18 for recording there in the amount of the check against the item for which the expenditure is made. The side edge of the voucher 15 which lies at the top of the record column 16 is provided with a series of perforations 19 whereby the voucher is adapted for shingling with other vouchers in the manner described above.
The minor portion 82 of the duplicate section 62 is imprinted as a substantial duplicate of original payroll tab 1|, the corresponding indicia and areas being in registry with one another.
The transfer section 64 is provided with a pressure-sensitive transfer medium 85 on the surface of the transfer section which will lie adjacent the duplicate section. The transfer medium 85 is preferably distributed over the transfer section 64 so that it will lie under only the pertinent portions of the check and original payroll tab, thus incidental data not necessary for the record keeping purposes will not be impressed upon the voucher or the duplicate payroll tab.
The adaptation illustrated may be easily prepared from a single sheet of paper by imprinting suitable portions of the sheet and folding it as illustrated in Fig. 6; that is, along line 88 dividing the original and transfer sections and along line 89 dividing the original and duplicate sections. To facilitate separation of these sections from one another, a line of severance is preferably provided through the sheet along each of the fold lines 88 and. 89. By providing duplicate section 62 with projecting tabs 90 having perforations 9!, the sheets are adapted for securing a number together with rings or other binding means passed through the perforations 9 I. Preferably the sheet is provided with a line of severance 92 between the duplicate section and the projecting tab 90 to facilitate separation of the duplicate section from the binding.
In the particular form of the invention just described above it is intended that the entire original section 63, that is, the check and the original payroll tab, be given to the employe; the duplicate section is to be retained by the maker of the check. The voucher 15 may be used in the manner previously alluded to, while the detachable payroll tab may be conveniently assembled with other tabs, as by pasting on a sheet, to keep a separate payroll record as is frequently desired.
In using the check book, it is advantageous to start with the check lowermost in the book. In this manner an impression is not formed upon the lower voucher, inasmuch as upon making of each check the carbon is despensed with. This system possesses a number of advantages which should be readily apparent. As can be seen, there is no portion of the figures indicating the makers account condition exposed to view while he makes out his check, inasmuch as the check covers the face of the voucher whereon are recorded any figures of deposits and balance, and the maker of the check may keep these matters confidential, with no fear of exposure. However, such figures are readily available to him from the next lower preceding voucher when he needs them.
An important advantage of this invention is that the maker of a check cannot through haste or negligence fail to record the amount and payee of a check, since it is automatically recorded as he makes the check. Furthermore, this record-- ing is accomplished in a neat, convenient manner and each check and voucher appears prepared for use, with no prior assembling necessary upon the part of the check maker. The voucher system also makes a convenient accessory for an accounting of expenditures and is suflicient for most individuals for summarizing for income tax purposes and the like.
As is apparent, the system also provides for an accurate system of recording expenditures, since an impression of the actual check is obtained and no errors can arise from transposition of figures in recording the amount for which a check was made.
While a preferred and specific form of the invention has been described along with various modifications, other modifications of this inven tion will be readily apparent and the invention is intended to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims and the prior art.
