UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES G. MOMICHAEL, OE LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
CONDUCTORS PASSENGER-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,823, dated June 3, 1884.
Application filed April 28, 1883. (N model.)
To all whom it wmy concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES G.MO1\IICHAEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State 7 invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The figure of the drawing is a face view of the check.
This invention has relation to checks for conductors ,use on railroad-cars; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawing, the letter A represents what I call the top of the check, and B the bottom thereof. On the left-hand side (marked 0) is a table containing the names of the months of the year, together with a printed request to the passengers to keep the check in sight. At the top of the check is printed the annual date, and on the right hand (marked D) are numbers corresponding to the days of the monthfrom one to thirty-one, inclusive. There is also a notice to the effect that the check has been canceled and cannot be used again. Furthermore, there is a blank space and line at the lower endand right side for the signature of the conductor. Interposed between the table containing the names of the months and the table containing the date thereof is a blank space, (marked E on the drawing.) This space E is provided for the conductors use for making memorandums in ink or pencil relating to any specific matter regarding the passengers such, for example, as the number of the station to which he has paid his fare, or special permission to stop over at some given station.
Heretofore conductors checks have been provided with ends usually rounded, on which is a direction to keep such check in sight, and both ends are alike. This similarity of the ends has sometimes caused losses to the railway companies, for the passenger has placed the check inside his hat-band after it has been punched, with the punched end concealed.
By this means very many fares have been lost.
To obviate this difficulty the top and bottom of my check are made unlike in appearance, and after the top has been punched a second ride by means of my check is prevented. The top of the check only is shown, while the bottom is placed under the band of the passengers hat or cap.
I claim as my invention- The conductors check described, having top A, with annual dates, the side 0, with a table of the names of the months, side D, with a table of days, the request to keep the check in sight, and the blank space E, arranged both centrally and longitudinally of the check for official notes or memorandums, substantially as specified.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AIWIES G. MOMIOHAEL.
