WILLIAM E. PARKER, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO C. 13. STANLEY & 00., ()F SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR CHESS-MEN.
Specification forming part of" Design No. 10,508, dated March 5, 1878; application filed January 30, 1878. [Term of patent '7 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. PARKER, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have originated and de signed a new Design for Chess-Men, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying photographic illustration or drawing, making part of this specification.
The lower part of each piece, except the castle, consists of a circular base and upright body, ornamented by leaflets, as shown, and surmounted by figures herein described.
1 and 8 designate the pawns, the former of which represciilts, in miniature, the head and shoulders of a Russian soldier, with his large cap, and the latter represents the same of a Turkish soldier, with his head covered by a turban; and these may be made in different color, as in ordinary chess-men.
2 designates the bishop, the same representing, in miniature, the head and shoulders of an ecclesiastic or priest, wearing a tall pointed cap and a necklace, with a cross or crescent pendent therefrom, the cross on the bishop re ilresenting the Russian forces, and the crescent on the bishop representing the Turkish forces.
If desired, bishops of the same design throughout, but of different colors, may be used in each of the opposing sets.
3 and 5 designate the kings, 3 representing, in miniature, the head and shoulders of the Russian Czar, and 5 represents, in miniature, the head and shoulders of the Sultan of Turkey.
4 designates the queen, 6 the castle, and 7 the knight, all of which, respectively, may be alike in opposing sets, except in color. The base of the castle is in part round and in part hexagonal, surmounting which base is a central cylindrical castle, having a conical top,
and on the sides of its lower end are three semi-cylindrical castles of the same general de sign.
The general idea of the two opposing sets of men is, that they represent, in miniature, the opposing forces of the Russian and Turkish armies.
I claim as my invention 1. The design for a set of chess-men, the opposing pieces in which consist of bust representations, in miniature, of the opposing forces of the Russian and Turkish armies, respectively, substantially as described, and shown in the accompanying illustration.
2. In a set of chess-men, the design for the kings 3 and 5, the opposing pieces consisting of bust representations, in miniature, of the Russian Czar and Turkish Sultan, respectively, substantially as described, and shown in the accompanying illustration.
3. In a set of chess-men, the design for the pawns 1 and 8, the opposing pieces of which consist of bust representations, in miniature, of the Russian and Turkish soldiers, respectively, substantially as described, and shown in the accompanying illustration.
4. In a set of chess-men, the design for the castle 6, consisting of the round and hexagonal base, surmounted by the central cylindrical and the semi-cylindrical castles, substantially as described, and shown in the accompanyin g illustration.
5. In a set of chessmen, the design for the bishops 2, composed of a bust representation, in miniature, of an ecclesiastic, substantially as shown in the accompanying photographic illustration.
WILLIAM E. PARKER.
