Description

OF D 16932? DESIGN.
E. HAVILAND. I Dinner, Tea and Toilet S ts.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWIN IIAVILAND, OF PL AINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR DINNER, TEA, AND TOILET SETS.
Specification forming part of Design No. 10,328, dated November 27, 1877; application filed November 14, 1877- [Term of Patent 3% years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN I'IAVILAND, of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of NewJersey, have invented a certain new and useful Design for Dinner, Tea, and Toilet Sets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My present invention consists in a design for the handles of dishes of various kinds, such as dinner, tea, and toilet sets, which de sign is of a neat, novel, and ornamental character, and in no respect deteriorates from the strength of that important adjunct to a dish or other fragile vessel, as will be clearly un derstood by reference to the accompanying diagrams, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a tureen (so called) with its cover placed upon it, and Fig. 2 is a top view of such dish.
A designates the body, and B the cover, of an ordinary oval soup'tureen. G O G are the handles, fashioned according to my present design, a being a base-piece, projecting slightly outward from the dish, and provided with ornamental end pieces 0 d, as shown in the drawing.
The handles 0 are slab-like lugs b, oblong in shape, and projecting outwardly from the dish sufficiently far tobe used for the purposes for which they are intended.
I have shown the two ends of a handle as approaching each other toward the base, thereby causing their upper corners to project slightly outward beyond the main portion of the body thereof in a longitudinal direction, which projection is followed by a slight inward curve along the face of the ends of the handles.
The sides or faces of said oblong lugs are provided Wlth a panel portion, g, whiclnin the present instance, is defined by a studded bead or rib, h; and this panel 9 is provided with an ornamental desi gn,f, of suitable charactersay, a bunch of leaves, flowers, or boughs as will be understood by reference to the drawmg.
It will be observed that there is no opening whatever through the handles (1 just described-that they are solid structures; and hence, in the production of this new design, I have strength without sacrificing beauty, and vice versa, accordingly as a persons taste may dictate.
What I claim as my invention is- A design for the handle of a dish, consisting of the base-piece a, the panel 9 on the sides of the oblong slab b, and the ornamental design f, all substantially as herein shown and described.
