JOHN V. WACKERMAN, OF BUFFALO;NEWA YORK.v
Leners Pam No. 99,984, dated Fam/ry 15, 1870.
IMPROVE!) WA`SHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, JOHN V. WACKERMAN, ofthe city of BuiTalo, in the county of Erie, and the State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a washing-machine with a curved and corrugated metal washing-bed, the same to be operated in conjunction with a rubber, corrugated, and adjustable rubbinghead, the whole being secured to and on the top of a wash-tub ou which itis Iadjustable.
I refer to the drawing which Imakes a part of' this speciication Figure 1 represents the washing-machine, in a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a sectional cut through the working parts of the`washingmachine.
A iu the drawing is the wash-tub.
The same is provided with two toothed racks, A1, into which tit two catches, A2, as illustrated in the drawing. Said toothed racks and catches have for their object to provide for a chance oi' adjusting the wash-bed with itseonnections, so as to make it easy to the operator to Work the same.
B is the curved corrugated metal wash-tub.
The same is-rest-ing on the top of wash-tub A, and is provided with two uprights, B.
C is the rubber' corrugated and adj ust-able rubbing- The same is suspended by means of two suspending rods, D.
Said rods are secured with their lower ends to the rubbing-head C, and with their upper ends to supporting shaft E, and are provided on their upper ends with a spiral spring and regulating nut, as plainly seen in the drawing. The object of said spiral springs and nuts is to adjust the power required for depressing the corrugated rubber r\1bbing-head,in order to bring the same in contact with the material to be washed.
It will he observed that the material to be vifashedl is to be placed between the curved and corrugated of the 'rack and pawl. This is an important feature in the invention, as the position of the wash-bed and rubber' materially effect the operation of the latter. Suicient water is held by the clothes placed between the rubber and bed to wash them.
I am aware that a ratchet or pawl or other equivalent device has heretofore been employed to move the wash-bed in the box, but heretofore the device has always been employed in the interior of the box, where it is likely to become inoperative, in consequence of the wash-beds coming in contact with the clothes in the box. Besides, if metal is employed for the rack and pawl, they are liable to corrode 'from the action of the water in the box. i
Myarrangement'of the rack and'pawl on thetop of the box entirely obviates these objections.
I hereby disclaim' the employment of'a rack and pawl operating in the interior of the wash-tub; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
The wash-tub A, in combination with the corrugated wash-bed B, rubbing-head D, suspending rods D provided with coiled springs E', and nuts and toothed rack Al and catches or pawls A, when said rack and pawls are located omthe top of the sides of the tub A, as constructed and described.
JOHN V. WACKERMAN.
