Description

Amm,
ALFRED MCDANIEL, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 88,193, dated M arch 23, 1869.
WASH-BOILER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED'MCDANIEL, of the city and county of Dubuque, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash-Boilers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature thereof', sufcient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure lis a central longitudinal section of the device illustrating my invention.
flow is prevented, as will be hereafter described.
In the drawings- A represents an ordinary wash-boiler, within which is placed the additional boiler B, which is constructed of suitable form and size to t said outer boiler, but to leave a space between them.
C is a conical, or funnel-shaped bottom, which may have a series of openings, or apertures, and rests on the bottom of the outer cylinder, as seen in g. 1.
A series of bars D, is placed within the boiler B, and aords lodgnient, or rest for the cloth to be washed, as ordinarily.
To the outer side of the boiler B, I secure a series of strips, E, which project at an angle therefrom, and
extend vertically from the top to a point below the centre of the boiler.
These s tlips are arranged side by side, and when the boiler is in its place, their outer edges come in contact with the inner face of the boiler B, as seenin fig. 2.
It will be seen that a series of channels, b, is formed, through and in which the Water ascends, and this ascent is thereby uniform.
F is a ledge, mounted ou or scoured to the top of the boiler, or the strips E. This ledge extends around the top of the boiler, and, by preference, in an inclined direction, as seen in lig. 1. A space is left betweenthe boiler and the ledge, so that as the water ascends in the channels b, and reaches the ledge, it is caused to strike it, and be thereby de lected so as to fall into the boiler, and then circulate as formerly.
The overflow of water is thus prevented, which overflow is a serious objection to boilers, and liable to extinguish the re.
In the operation of the boiler, the water first ascends outside of the funnel O, then through the passages b, striking the ledge F, down .into the boiler, through the clothes, and then out of the boiler, through its bottom, or spaces a.
, The strips E, likewise, assist in holding and supporting the inner boiler.
Having thus describedmy invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The series of project-ing strips E, between the inner and outer boilers, forming passages b, and the ledge F, in combination with the internal and external boiler, as and for the purpose described.
ALFRED MGDANIEL.
