Description

iid-niiet tatea parte anni.
Letters Patent N .l 99,450, dated February 1, `1ero.
MOC-
- rMPRovzsm wAsHIivG-'MACHINR The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the salme.
To all whom it may concern Be it knowu that I, PETER LooKIE, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section and Figure 2, a section lof a right angles to fig. 1.
, Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in bot-h figures.
My invention consists in combining with the cylinportion of the cylinder at' `imiter-ot'afwashing-machine; aseries of-iadmhslatsmr vthe sides of the cylinder, converging or widening as they extend from the centre outward, so as to form a wedging space-within,whic'h concentrates the clothes, and gites the maximum degree of agitation; also, in
` the thither arrangement of' the box for discharging the dirt, and attaching awringing-machine, the. wholeas hereinafter set 4foi/th.
In the'drawings- A indicates the box-of` the washing-machine; and
' B, theI washing-cylinder, mounted therein, and receiving motion by means of crank Aa, and gears b c, or any equivalent arrangement.
In the present case, I form a-rim, a', on the side of the cylinder, and have a lfriction-wheel, b, in contact therewith, whereby motion maybe communicated to the cylinder.
It is desirable to dispense with toothed wheels and rims, owing to the liability of metals to rust, and of wood to swell.
In general features, thecylinder may be of any desired construction," but I prefer that shown' in Athe drawings, in which it is formed with closed sides l d,
and open roundsor bars f f f.
On the inner faces of the sides d, l secure radial slats or rollers g g, either stationary or revolving, extending from the centre to periphery, as shown.
These slats gradually widen or increase in projection from the sides d, as they extend from the centre to periphery, asindicated in g. 2,thereby leaving a wedging space, h, near the periphery, which concentrates the clothes in a close mass.
Loose balls 'i c' are employed, as in some other ma- 'Y chines, for giving additional action.
The 4special feature 0i' novelty in this portion of my invention is the employment ot' these slats, the effect being to concentrate the clothes in the wedging space as they are carried around, and fall back, thereby l producing a squeezing-action, and driving the water eiect cannot heproduced where the. slats aredispensed with, as in that cas'ethe force of the water is diii'used, and the clothes do not present'themselves in the best positionV for action.
In addition to the above, this arrangement of the slats is such as tovraise the water and discharge it upon the `clothes in the most effective manner. It starts imperceptihly and in a body, at the centre, but the widening of the slats dinses it into many curwedgiug space, thereby driving through the clothes with great force, and meeting and converging, so as to produce great agitation.
lar direction, to` produce an; intense pounding.
In the angle s, at the llfgttom of box'A, is a discharge-orifice, It; and-above this, and near the periphery of the cylinder, as clearly shown in iig. 1.` v
The dust and sediment extracted from the clothes, settles down through this bottom into the still space below, and, from the peculiar'angular form of the chamber, and its remoteriess from the cylinder, is prevented from rising again'in a body, to contaminate the clothes, as would he the case were the space open. This arrangement of the false bottom," covering the angular space, I believe to be new.
At one end of the box, on the inside, is situated a cross-cleat, on, having a free space, n, between it and the end ofthe box, and a discharge-opening, p, anthe bottom, leading back into theinterior ofthe box.
This arrangement is for. the attachment oi' a wring ing-machine, the expressed water from which runs down space mand escapes through opening p, into discharge. This feature I also believe original with myself- Y What I claim as `my invention, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, isfthe peripheral rounds f, forming a weglg'ing space, as shown, the box A, with perforated bottom b, overhanging the angular' space s, and the cleat m, with space n, and return-passage lo, when the parts are constructed and operate as described and shown.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. PETER LOCKIE. Witnesses: i
