UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
GEORGE L. FERRIS, OF MEXICO, MISSOURI.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO- 330.573, dated November 17, 1885.
Application filed July 15, 1884. Serial No. 137,781.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. FERRIS, of Mexico, county of Audrain, Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to improvements in.
washing-machines; and it consistsin the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts,as hereinafter fully described and pointed outin the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved washing-machine on the line at m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line y 3 Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the ribs or troughs.
The circular drum A is pivoted to revolve in a box or tub, B, having a cover, 0. The drum A is provided with a segmental hinged part, D, forming the cover of the drum, and provided on one side with a spring-latch, I, having an aperture through which a stud, E, on the outer surface of one side of the drum, can pass to look the part D in place. The
drum A is also provided with a crank-handle, F, for turning it. On the inner surface of the drum and hinged part D a series of ribs or troughs, G, are formed, which are parallel with the axis of the drum and project from the inner surface of the rim of the drum.
(ModeL) slots provided for the ribs, and on the ends of 5 the bottoms J of the ribs or troughs tongues l are formed, which are passed through slots in the sides or heads of the drum, and are then bent down, as shown, to hold the hollow ribs in place. The clothes are placed in the drum, which is closed. The water is filled into the box or tub and the drum is revolved. The hollow ribs G carry up the clothes and then let them drop, and they also act as buckets and carry up the water, which then drops upon the clothes in the drum. The water passes into the drum through the apertures K in the hollow ribs.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a washing-machine,the combination, with the drum, of the hollow ribs G, having flanges m on the longitudinal edges, tongues Z on the ends of the bottoms J,and apertures K in the said bottoms, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE L. FERRIS. Witnesses:
