Description
ama eine @met @twine JOHN D. VAN DUSEN, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TOHIMSELF AND JACOB ,BRINKERHOFR OF SAME PLACE.
IMPRovED WASHINn/mcmwn.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
-reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the leters oi' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washing-machine,-
as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appeitains to make land use the same,
I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which reprepresent a longitudinal vertical section of my machine.
A represents-the tub of my machine, resting upon legs B B.
Ata suitable point within the tub A is mounted a roller, C, the journals of which pass 'through the sides of the tub or box. v
On the outer surface of the roller O is placed a series of ribs, a a, said ribs running longitudinally lat equal distances apart along the roller.
lhe surface ofthe roller G, insteadof being provided with these ribs a a, may be corrugated with a series ofvgrooves running longitudinallya suitable distance apart, the same as above stated for the ribs.
lVithin the tub or b'oX A is also suspended abeater,
II), the lower portion of'which is also corrugated, or provided with similar ribs ruiming parallel with the ribs on the roller or'cylinder O.
The beater D obtains a reciprocating or swinging motion by means of a pitman, E, attached to a crank on one of the journals to the roller C, said crank being also used for operating or turning the roller.
Under the lower end of the beater D, in the bottom of the box, is placed a curved or inclined plane, G, upon which the clothes are placed. Then, by revolving the cylinder, which gives the swinging motion to the beater, they are alternately pressed against the cylinder and loosened from the same, lthe revolving of the cylinder causing the clothes to spread out and turn as the beater recedes from it.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-` I ters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the oscillating beater D, a
rotating cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. s
2. The combination f the box A, cylinder C, beater D, pitman E, and -curved or inclined plane G, all constructed and arranged as described, to operate substantially as and for-the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN D. VAN DUSEN. Witnesses:
WALTER WINCH, HORACE T. 000K.
