Description

PAU-L WEATHERBEE, OF PORT WASHINGTON,v OHIO Letters Patent No. 113,227, dated March 28,1871.
VllvieaoviaivlisN'r |N wAsHERs AND wRiNGERs.
The Schedule referred to in th'ese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all'whom, 'it may conce/ra,-
Be itA known that I, PAUL WEATHERBEE, of Port Washington, in the county 0i' Tuscarawas and- State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined W'asher and Wringer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the salue, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specication andto the letters and jg'ures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation ,of `my invention as applied to a wash-tub.
This invention has relation to improvements in clothes-washers and wriugers; and i It consists in the combiuationand peculiar arrangement of rollers and devices for that purpose, hereinafter described, the object being to produce a combined washing and wringing-machine, simple in construction and effective in operation. l
Referring to the drawing, the vertical and horizontal portions of' the frame, A and A, are'connected by a mortise-joint.
The lower portion of the frame A is slotted, to admit the bearings b of the roller O, and is perforated to form bearings for the spindle c ot' the roller O'.
The bearings b of the roller O are made adjustable and elastic or yielding by means of the connectingrods d that pass up through the frame AA, as shown, and are connected by a screw and nut, or like means,
" to a spring, athe back of which rests on the center of the frame A. i To the end of the spindle c a crank, t, is fixed, for the application-of the hand, and to the ends oi' the frame A the braces f andf are attached, `the brace f being made adjustable by means ot' peribrations or holes in the frame A, laterally, so as to fix the machine on and adapt it to any-sized wash-tub, g. The rollers-may be covered with elastic or not.
To be used, the machine should be placed as in iig.
1, the frame A inside of the" tub, and the braces f and f outside of it and under it, as shown, the nuts on the braces being turned down notti/ the braces are drawn tightly against the bottom of the tub.
Wash-tubs vary in width, but not much in height; therefore the machine is adapted' to wash-tubs or' all sizes.
The operation of washing consists in saturating the clothes or goodsto be washed with soap-suds, then rubbing or rolling them until the dirtv is dissolved or decomposed, and then pressing ont thc 'soap-suds and dirt together, consisting of' three operations, the last two of which, the rubbing or rolling and the wringing or pressing, my machine is especially designed to do, and withbutlittle wearto the goods.
The soap-suds in the .tub should come up almost or lquite tothe lower.,-rol ler, and, as the rollers revolve, -thegoods shoulvdfbepassed between them vand droppedinto the suds, and the operation repeated, with alternate reverse rolling on'those portions needing more than ordinary washing, until the goods are clean, when they should be passed between the rollers and kept from falling back into the suds again, which constitutes the wringing:V Alike operation can be gone through with in rinsing, and the wasing is completed. I claim as my invention- The combined washer and wringer herein described, consisting oi' the frame A A', braces f and f', spring e, bearing and connecting-rods b, rollers Gand O, and
crank t', all constructed, combined, and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specilfied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' PAUL' WEATHERBEE.
Witnesses:
JAMES WEATHERBEE, H. H. PORTER.
