SPOOL-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANGELINE BENZE and GEORGE L. HUBBELL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Con necticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to spool holders adapted for attachment to a persons garment as for instance a ladys waist and has for its object the production of a device which will be simple, practical and inexpensive to manufacture; whereby a spool of thread may be conveniently supported in readiness to be unwound, from time to time as required, and adapted to be detached if necessary for the substitution of other kinds of thread; further to provide in connection with said holder a cutter whereby the thread may be readily severed at any point and finally to devise a hook in connection therewith for the support of a thimble in such a way that it will also form a shield for the cutter and whereby the latter will not be exposed.
WVith the above and other minor objects in view our invention resides and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts shown upon the accompanying sheets of drawing forming a part of this specification upon which,
Figure 1, shows a front elevation of our improved holder complete wit-h spool of thread supported therein. Fig. 2, is a rear view of the holder shown in Fig. 1, but without the spool of thread, and Fig. 3, is an edge view as seen from the left of Fig. 2, a thimble being indicated as supported therein, by dotted lines.
The holder is formed of sheet metal and wire combined, the former being blanked up in the desired shape, while the wire is suitably bent formed and attached to the sheet metal part.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings 5 represents the main plate of the holder which is of a general elongated shape having suitable irregular or scalloped edges and an enlarged-depending central portion 6. To the lower end of this depending portion is secured as by means of a rivet a yieldable Specification of Letters Patent.

hook 7 that is designed to support a thimble as shown in Fig. 8. The body portion of the plate beneath this hook is stamped out as shown to form a knife 8 of the two intersecting side edges which are ground 01f as indicated in the drawings to form a cutting edge over which the thread is drawn and severed. The point of this knife is thus disposed outward at an angle from the body, but is fully protected by the thimble hook that is disposed upward across the said knife for the purpose of preventing the user from accidentally injuring herself by con tact with the knife as might be the case were the hook not arranged across it.
The wire portion of the holder is preferably formed in two parts and serves both as a support for the spool and further as a means for the attachment of the holder to a garment. This wire is in part soldered to the plate as indicated by 9 and .is further secured by forming tongues 10 integral with the plate and rolling them up over and around the respective wires 11 and 12 of the opposite side portions.
13 represents a coil in the wire to form a spring for the pin 14 which in practice is inserted through a garment and disposed under the hook 15 for the attachment of the holder to such garment. wires are provided with depending portions 16 and 17 having inwardly disposed ends 18 that enter the opposite ends of the hole of the spool for rotatably-supporting the same. Said spool being placed thereon by springing the opposite wires 16 and 17 apart while the spool is inserted therebetween.
Having thus described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a holder of the class described, the same comprising a plate having an inter mediate central portion struck forward to form. a cutting edge, a hook attached to the plate to support a thimble and disposed across the said cutting edge to protect the blade, depending wire portions secured to the plate to engage and support a spool from the plate, and means for the attachment of the holder to a garment.
2. In a spool holder of the class described, the combination with a plate, a thimble hook attached thereto, a cutting blade ar- The respective ranged beneath and protected by the hook, Fairfield and State of Connecticut, A. D. two separate wires secured to the plate and 1910.
each having one end disposed downwardly T to form a spool holder and their opposite gggi ends arranged to form a pin and eye respecx T J tii'ely for the attachment of the holder to a Witnesses: rment. C. M. NEWMAN,
Signed at Bridgeport, in the county of RUTH RAYMOND.
