' A TTORNEV UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK D. OSTERHOUDT, OF RENTON,WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO DOUGLAS LEWIS AND ONE-THIRD 'lO GEORGE II. WILLIAMS, OF RENTON,
WASHINGTON.
SPOOL-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK D. OSTER- HOUDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Renton, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool- Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.
This invention relates to holders for thimbles and spools of thread; and has for its object the rovision of a device of this nature which will be of inexpensive construction, and exceedingly convenient in use.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of arts, as will be hereinafter described and c aimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of devices embodying my invention. Fig. 4 is a pers ective view of the same with a spool and t imble supplorted thereby.
T e holder is comprised of a plate 5 of a substantially rectilinear configuration and having intermediate its ends, two oppositely disposed Win s 6 which are bent so as to protrude forwardly. These wings are apertured, as at 7, to provide bearings for the reduced extremities 8 of an arbor 8 which carries the spool 9 and such arbor has its ends engaged by the wings through spreading the latter to introduce the arbor and then releasing the wings to resume their normal position.
In the upper edge of each of the wings, and in proximity of their forward ends, is a triangular shaped notch 10, having its edges 10 filed or otherwise formed to present sharp cutting edges for severing the thread when drawn therea ainst.
Adjacent of the lower end of the plate the same is provided with a plurality of perforations 11 wherethrough is successively passed the thread-end 9 for the purpose of creating a resistance to the withdrawal of the thread from the spool and also retaining the extremity within convenient reach of the user. At the back of said plate and near its top is a safety-pin 12 whereby the holder may be secured to a womans garment. This pin can be secured to the plate in any reliable manner,

but desirably by stamping out portions 13 of the plate to afford eyes 13 wherein the pin shank 12 is held.
A ring 14 for the reception of a thimble 15 is secured to the plate somewhat above the wings, and, most conveniently, by making the same of a band which is centrally looped to form the ring and has its extremities extended through an incision 16 of the plate and thence turned in opposite directions, as at 14, upon the rear face of the plate.
17 is ,a hole whereby the device may be suspended when unemployed.
Assuming that the thimble and spool are respectively supported by the ring and arbor, anc that the end of the thread has been passed to and. fro through the perforations 11, as already described and the device then secured to a persons waist-garment by the aforesaid safety-pin, the thread can then be readily withdrawn to a desired length and cut off by drawing it sharply into a notch 10 of a wing. The thimble is within convenient reach for use and after the needle has been threaded sewing can be proceeded with. As often as the thread becomes exhausted another length may be taken from the spool and severed and without loss of time and annoyance had where the spool is required to be sought for at each successive demand for a length of thread.
An advantage of this invention resides in its availability for those who use a continuous thread in their work, as in knittin or crocheting, the device securing the spoo or ball of material to the users dress and preventing its loss when moving about. It can obviously be made in sizes to suit the character of work required and its simple construction allows of its manufacture at a low cost.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A holder of the class described comprising a plate formed intermediate the ends of its longitudinal edges with forwardly-extending wings having notches in their upper edges, said notches provided with sharp cutting edges, and said wings having apertures therethrough to receive a spool-carry ing spindle, said plate being provided adjacent its lower end with a plurality of apertures disposed one above the other through apertures the thread on the spool is passed, which the thread from the spool carried on lugs struck out from the rear face of said said spindle is passed. late and a fastening device carried by said 2. A holder of the class described, comliigs.
