Description
1961 H. B. PROCK 3,004
COMBINED SPOOL AND NEEDLE THREADING DEVICE Filed April 4, 1960 INVEN TOR.
175555575. PROCK.
Unite t My present invention relates to hand sewing and more particularly to a combination in thread carrying spools.
An object of the invention is to provide a thread carrying spool having a needle threading loop and a thread cutting blade as a combination upon an end of the thread carrying spool.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel attachment for the end of the thread cutting spool by which a needle threading device and thread cutting blade may be carried as a part of the spool.
Other objects and advantages will be in part evident to those skilled in the art and in part pointed out hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein there is shown by way of illustration and not of limitation a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing wherein like numerals refer to like par-ts throughout the several views:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of the spool, partly in section,
FIGURE 2 is a top view of the spool as shown in FIG- URE 1,
FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 showing a needle upon a threader and in position for threading,
FIGURE 4 is a side view of a modified form of the invention,
FIGURE 5 is a top view of the device as shown in FIG- URE 4,
FIGURE 6 is a further modification of the invention.
From time to time there has been oflered on the market many different devices for threading needles. One of the more practical and eificient devices for this purpose has consisted of a length of very fine steel wire bent to form a distorted diamond shaped loop with a relatively sharp point and the ends of the wire being secured together upon a suitable support or handle forming member.
In accordance with my invention, as illustrated in FIG- URES 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, I have mounted a needle threading device of the above character, designated by the numeral 10, in a recess 11 formed at one end of a conventional thread carrying spool 12. As a further feature of my invention I have also provided a V-notch 13 at the rim of the spool end in which there is mounted a blade 14 for cutting lengths of thread when unwound from the spool. As shown in FIGURE 3 of the drawing, when the eye of the needle 15 is forced over the loop of the needle threading device the loop, due to the resilience of the wire, will return to its open diamond shape. A length of thread 16 may then be projected through the loop and into the spindle accommodating hole which is a common feature of all thread carrying spools. After the thread 16 has been projected into the hole of the spool 12 a withdrawal of the needle from the loop of the needle threading device 10 the thread 16 will be drawn through the eye of the needle and thus thread the needle without any eyestraining effort on the part of the user.
3,004,691 Patented Oct. 17, 1961 In the above form it will be readily seen that the needle threading device 10 will be provided upon each spool of thread sold, and since this might prove expensive and therefore objectionable to some thread manufacturers I have in FIGURES 4 and 5 of the drawing shown a modification of my invention which consists of a disc like member 17 having a rim of downwardly extending spring fingers 18 that will serve to center and hold the disc 17 upon the spool 12. In this instance the disc 17 has a central opening to register with the hole in the spool and secured against the outer surface of the disc .17 by means of an ofifset 19 I secure the spring wire needle threading device 10. As a means for cutting the thread taken from the spool 12 the disc 17 has an upstanding triangular barb 20 with a sharpened edge over which the thread may be drawn for cutting.
In another form of my invention, as shown in FIGURE 6, I employ a disc like member 21 having a central opening with depending tongues 22 that are arranged to extend downwardly into the hole of the spool 12. Fixed to this disc 21 there is a similar needle threading device 10 which, as in the showing or" FIGURE 5, is secured by the offset 19 and to one side of its central opening the disc 21 also carries an upstanding thread cutting barb 20.
While I have, for the sake of clearness and in order to disclose my invention so that the same can be readily understood, described and illustrated a specific form and arrangement, I desire to have it understood that this invention is not limited to the specific form disclosed, but may be embodied in other ways that will suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art. It is believed that this invention is new and all such changes as come within the scope of the appended claims are to be considered as part of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a thread carrying spool having a central spindle accommodating opening, a diamond loop wire needle threading device secured in an accommodating recess on one end of said spool with its loop centered over the opening in said spool, and a thread cutting blade recessed in a notch at the rim of a flange of the spool with its cutting edge tangent to the axis of the spool.
2. The combination of a thread carrying spool having a central spindle accommodating opening, a diamond loop wire needle threading device mounted in a recess at one end of said spool with its loop centered over the opening through said spool, whereby a needle threaded over the loop of said needle threading device may be threaded by projecting a length of thread through said loop and into the spindle accommodating opening of said spool and withdrawing the needle from the needle threader.
