NEEDLE.

This invention relates to needles and the object of the invention is to provide a needle which may be threaded with the utmost ease and facility.V

Another object of the invention is to provide a needle 'in' which the met-al at one side of the eye may be removed to allow the thread to be drawn into the eye.

A further object of` the invention to provide a needlein which the end ot' the thread mav be bindingly secured in the eye.

Another object of the invention is to'provide a device of the character described so arranged as to allow normal use of the needle without interference.

The above and other objects will be aparent from the ollowingdescription where- 1n reference is made to the accompanying drawings 'illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention.

The needle comprises a body portion 1 having an eye 2. The portion 3 of the metal at one side 0i the eye 2 is separated from the body portion 1 at the point 4 and has the nature of a spring tongue which is beveled at 5 to 'form 'a point adapted to engage in the V shaped groove 6 provided in the needle at the end of the eye v2 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. If desired the portion 3 may be provided with a spring metal portion 7 adaptedto engage the body' portion 1 at the opposite side of the eye and hold the end- 5 in engagement with the seat 6. -By this arrangement the member 3 may be depressed by drawing a thread thereagainst and allowing the thread to be drawn into the portion 8 of the eye at which time it may be drawn past the 'spring member 7 `serted in the eye 14, or the thread into the portion 2 of the eye at which time the needle is threaded for sewing.-

If desired the spring member 7 may be done away -with in which event the tendency ofthe met-al portion 3 to spring outwardly holds the end 5 seated in the groove 6.

In Fig. 6 a construction is shown for the adaptation of the construction to a sewing machine needle. This needle is provided with an eye 14 and a ortion 15 which f orms one side of the eye similar to the 'portlon 3 shown in Fig. 3 and extending-longitudinally of the needle .and is provided with 16 which is adapted to engage in a notch 17 provided on the under side vof a' shoulder 18 formed in the body ef the needle, the needle being provided with a notch 19 adjacent the shoulder. Adjacent the eye '14 the member 15 is provided with a tongue 20 engaging in a notch 21 in the needle adjacent the eye which prevents the possibility of withdrawing the thread from the eye after being positioned therein.

2. A needle having an elongated eye, and

having one Wall of said eye slit adjacent td one end of the eye, and forming a spring tongue `the body of the needle having a longitudinally channeled portion forming a seat normally receiving the free end of said spring tongue to maintain the eye closed, said tongue being urged by its resiliency outwardly to an acutely divergent relation to said needle, when released from said seat, and being laterally flexible to disengage it from said seat.
