SPECIFICATION forming part f Letters :Patent NO.- 609,712, dated August 23, 1898.

To` all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELTON H. THOMPSON, a citizen of theUnitedStates,residingatDrakes Mills, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in needles especiallyadapted for use in sewing or lacingleather belts.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a needle that can be readily threaded and which when threaded will hold the lacing firmly and rigidly, as is necessary in the use of needles of this character.

With this and other objects in view looking toward simplifying and improving devices of this character generally my invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of simple parts 'that will4 hereinafter be fully set forth, and the points of novelty will be particularly pointed out in.

I am enabled to accomplish the objects of my invention by the simple means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents an enlarged perspective view of a needle constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being threaded ready for use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts of the needle slightly separated. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the needle,showing the same threaded, the sliding sleeve being moved upon the lacing and the screw-threaded shank ready to be screwed to proper position; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the screwthreaded shank.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l indicates the body portion of the needle,which is provided with the usual point 2. Said body is screw-threaded internally for a short distance from one end thereof, as indicated by the numeral 3, for the reception of an externally screw-threaded shank 4, provided at its end with an eye 5 for the reception of the lacing 6.

The numeral 7' indicates a sleeve adapted to vmove upon said shank and slide upon the lacing, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, to prevent said lacing from slipping. When the lacing has been drawn through the eye, the sleeve is slid to the position shown in Fig. 3, thus firmly locking the lacing in proper position. After this is done the screwthreaded shank will be prevented from turning within the sleeve by the frictional contact of the lacing with the inner periphery of said sleeve, when, it will be obvious, the screwthreaded shank can be screwed the entire distance into the pointed body until it assumes the position shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings.

When it is desired to unthread the needle, it is only necessary to turn the sleeve until the screw-threaded shank is drawn suliiciently from the body to permit the sliding sleeve to be slid downwardly, exposing the eye of the shank, from which the lacing can be readily removed.

While I have described my invention as particularly adapted for lacing belts and the like, it will be apparent that it may be madel upona very much smaller scale and adapted for various sewing operations.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A needle comprising a body, a shank longitudinally adjustable therein, provided with an eye, and a sleeve surrounding said shank and adapted to bear against the rear end of said body for limiting the inward movement of the shank therein.

2. A needle comprising a body, having a screw-threaded socket at the rear end thereof, a shank adapted to screw intosaid socket and provided with an eye at its rear end, and a sleeve surrounding said shank and adapted to bear against the rear end of said body for limiting the inward movement of said shank, as and for the purpose set forth.
