No. 873,506. PATENTED DEC. 10, 1907.
H. D. CLARK.
SPOOL HOLDER. APPLICATION PIL'ED 'JULYIO. 1907.

HERVEY D.. CLARK, OF ARCOLA, ILLINOIS.
SPOOL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed July 10. 1907. Serial No. 383096.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERVEY D. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residin at Arcola, in the county of Douglas and tate of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in SpoolJ-Iolders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spool holders for holding spools of thread and for attaching the.
same to the garments of the person using the same; and it has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.-
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure I is a sectional view of a spool mounted upon the improved holder, the latter being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device applied to a ladys waist.
Corresponding parts in both figures are de noted by like characters of reference.
The improved spool holder is formed of wire and it comprises a body portion A, and a connecting portion B and an attaching portion 0. I
The body portion A is bent intermediate the ends thereof to form an arch 1 and straight ortions 23 formed in alinement with eac other adjacent to said arch. The connecting portion B is bent approximately at right angles to one of the straight portions, 2, and the attaching portion 0 is bent approximately at a right angle to the connecting portion B; said attaching portion being sharpened at its free extremity to form a pin point 4, which will readily penetrate the garments of the wearer. The attaching portion or pin C, it will be observed, is disposed approximately parallel to the body portion including the straight portions 2'3; and at the free extremity of the latter portion the wire is bent in the direction of the attaching portion 0 to form a catch 5 having a terminal eye 6.
In operation, the body portion A of the improved holder is inserted through the cent a aperture 7 of an ordinary spool 8; the inherent resiliency of the wire of which the device is formed permitting the catch 5 to be bent into approximate alinement with the body portion of the device, so that said body portion mayreadily be inserted through the aperture of the spool which is occupied by the arch 1 of the body portion, after which the catch 5 will spring into position adjacent to the end of the spool, as clearly seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thus securing the spool in position and preventing it from slipping off the holder; the arch 1 and the straight portions 23 of the body portion A will engage or bear upon diametrically op osite sides of the aperture or bore of the s to which latter will thus be held suflicient y firmly, but in such a manner as to be capable of rotating freely as the thread is being unreeled or unwound therefrom; when it is desired to remove the spool this may readily be effected by pressing the catch 5 in a downward direction, after which the spool may be readily withdrawn as will be easily understood. The eye portion 6 constitutes a handle by means of which the catch may be manipulated.
By this improved device the spool will be held and supported in such a manner that it will freely rotate when thread is drawn therefrom.
The entire device with the spool attached, may be readily supported by the pin or attaching member 0 upon the waist or any other garment of the operator, and it will be supported in such a manner as to swing freely upon the pin or attaching member 0, thus facilitating the manipulation of the thread.
Having thus fully described the invention,
