,Letters Patent No. 99,736, dated February 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-Box Fon BANK PonTERs.
The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent land making part of the same.
I, WILLIAM WILIIR, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Safety-Box for Bank Porters, &c.,of which the following is a specification. l
Y Nature and Object of the Invention.
My'invention consists of a box, the lid of which can be 'securedsubstantially iu the manner described hereafter, by a mtal strap or belt adapted to a mans waist, and furnished with the means of being locked thereto.
The object of 4my invention is to provide such -a safe ymedium for conveying from one bankers, brokers, or merchants oice to another, money and other valuables, that the latter 4cannot be seized by thieves during preconcerted attacks, which` have 'equently been made in our large cities on bank-porters.
Description' of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is an exterior perspective view of my improved safety-box for bank porters, &c.
Figure 2, a perspective view ot the box as it appears when partly open.
General Description.
A and A are the two halves of a light'bnt strong metal box, the said halves being hinged together at a1., and a portion of'` one-half projecting into the other half, so asto insure an accurate and secure joint.
, In front of the-half A of the box is a metal stra-p, b, terminating atthe top in an enlargement, c, through which is an oblong hole.y rIwo similar ,metal straps, d, are'secured to the front of the portion A' o r lidot' the box, and these straps have enlargements e e,- through which are holes corresponding with those in the enlargementc of the stra-p l).
When the box isclosed, as shown in iig. 1, the enlarged ends of the straps d, of the' half or lid A', will overlap the front of the other half A ot the box, and the enlarged ends of the strap b will overlap the front of the upper half of the box, so that the' holes of the three enlargements will coincide with each other, and the elastic metal strap B can be passed through the holes of the three straps, thereby securing'the two halves of the box together.
Money or other valuables having been deposited in the box, the latter is closed, and securedby the metal belt, as described. The belt is then clasped around the porters waist, and one or other of the eyes f j, at one end of the belt, adjusted over the staple 7L at the opposite end of the belt, and therel secured by a padlock attached to the staple, or the belt may be secured by any other suitable locking device. g
A strap, H, having `itsends attached to the oppof site ends'of the box, may be passed over the wearers head, and rest on his shoulder, so as to aid in supporting thebox, and enable the porter to carry the same with comfort.
' It will be evident that my improved' safety-box will afford ample security against 'the robberies of bank# porters, for the box ycannot be opened Without rst cutting the belt, which I prefer to make of steel, and
this `operation would be too tedious for a robber to resort to in crowdedthoroughfares.
Keys for locking and unlocking the belt may be keptat different banking houses, between which money exchanges take place,so that the porter him-- self` cannot gain access to the box, the'proper locking and unlocking being effected by the proper officers of the diiierent banking houses.
It is by no means essential that the -box should be constructed preciselyin the manner described;"it may be made of different shapes and diierent materials, the latter being such, however, that access cannot be had to the box by cutting or bruising the same, without difficulty.
` In place of the 'straps d, with their enlargements,
the lidrof the box may be provided with simple staplelike projections,,corresponding with -similar projections on the body of the box, so that the metal belt may be passed through the whole of the projection.
Claim. Y
A'box or case constructed so as to be secured by a metal strap or belt applied substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this'
