IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS FOR POCKET-BOOKS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH KINN, of the city of New York in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Loek for Pocket-Books, 850., of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to an improvement on that class of locks which are used on pocketbooks and. similar articles, and which consist of a rigid tongue that enters a mortised or recessed plate, the tongue being attached to the flap, and the mortised or recessed plate to p the body of the pocket-book or other article.

My invention consists in providing the mortised or recessed plate with inwardly-projecting shoulders, and with a pivoted camlever, and in using said recessed plate in connection with a metal tongue fitting said recess and provided with shoulders that bear against the shoulders of the recessed plate, when the tongue is inserted, the cam-lever locking the tongue to the mortised plate when swung down, while the .shoulders pre vent the longitudinal displacement of said tongue, all as hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawing- Figure 1 is a face view 'of'my improved lock, showing the same applied to a pocketbook. Fig. 2 is a central section of the look when closed; and Fig. 3, a central section of the same when opened, the tongue being withdrawn from the mortised plate.

The letter a represents the tongue-plate, and b the recessed or mortised plate, of my improved lock. The tongue-plate a is made of metal or equivalent material, and attached to the flap of the pocket-book or other article in the usual manner, and in such a way that the tongue projects beyond the edge of the flap. The tongue a may be made of suitable shape, but must be provided with one or more projecting shoulders, cc,'shown in Fig. 1. The plate I) is attached to the body of the pocket-book and provided with a mortise or recess of a size toadmit the tongue to. The plate I) is also provided with one or more inwardly extending shoulders, 01 d, against which the shoulders c of the tongue will bear, as shown in Fig. 1. In ears 0 e which project from the face of the plate b, or in other equivalent manner, is pivoted, over the face of the plate b, a lever, f. From the pivoted end of this lever project one or more arms, f", toward the recessed part of said plate, b, said arms constituting cams, that extend at about right angles to the body of the lever. When the lock is to be closed, the lever f is first swung up (see Fig. 3) so that the cams f will be carried away from the recess in b. The tongue a. is then introduced in the mortise or recess of the plate 12, the shoulders of the plate at extending beyond the shoulders of the plate 12, so that the said tongue cannot be withdrawn longitudinally from the recess. The lever f is then swung down (see Fig. 2) so that the cam or cams f of said lever will bear upon the tongue 0,, and thereby prevent said tongue from being lifted out of the mortise orrecess of the plate I). The tongue will now be tightly secured to the plate I), and the lock will consequently be closed. If the lock is to be opened the lever f is swung up, clearing the tongue a, whereupon ..the tongue or may be lifted out of the recess or mortise of the plate b, and the book opened.

It is evident that the style or shape of the tongue a, and consequently also that of the recessed or mortised plate, may be varied, but the tongue and mortised plate must be invariably providedwith one or more shoulders, 0 and d, and the mortised plate with the pivoted cam-lever, in order to carry my invention into effect; and I am aware that pivoted cam-1evers have heretofore been used on the recessed plates of buckles for lockin g flexible straps to such plates, such acam-lever being, for example, shown in the Patent No. 50,992, granted to Stearns and Corey, and I do not claim to have invented the application of a cam-lever to such plate, my invention relating to the combination of the cam-lever and recessed plate with a rigid tongue, which, unless it were provided with the shoulders herein doscribed would not be locked by the camlet'er, with the cam lever f, the rigid tongue at but could be longitudinally withdrawn. fitting into the recess 01' mortise of the plate I therefore claim as my invention- [)5 all substantially as herein shown and de- In a lock for pocket-book, &c., thecoinbiscribed.
