Description

ttiitt tda jp-@dnd ditta ALEEED BRADLEY, 0E NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, AssIGNoE To HIMSELE AND L. CUSHING, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 110,4:281 dated December 27, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE `FARE-BOXES.v
'.t'he Schedule referred to ln these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom/t may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED BRADLEY, otNew Orleans, inthe parish of Orleans and State of Lonisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement the accompanyingdrawing forming part of this speci'- The ligure is a detailseetional view of my .ilnproved fare-box.
My invention 'has for its object to furnish an improved fare-box for the conductor or collector to earry around when-collecting fares, and which shall be A so constructed that the fare cannot be extracted or removed by any one but the person having the key of the box; and
It consists in the construction and combination `of the various guards and leaves or plates with each other and with the case of the box, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the outer case or shell of the fare-box, the particular form or size of which is immaterial, and may bevaried as may be desired.
'Ihe lower part or bottom B ot' the box A is hinged at one side, and provided at the other side with a hasp `and staple to receive the lock and seal.
AIn the top of the box A is formed a slit, C, through which the passenger drops the exact fare when the box is presented to him by the conductor or collector, `so that the said conductor or collector need nevel' touch the money.
'Ihe slit C is divided longitudinally by a partition, D, to cause the fare to pass down at one or the other side of the box. e
E is an angular or V-shaped guard, which is pivo ted at its angle directly below, close to, and in line with the lower edge of the partition D, so that the fare, as it is dropped into the box, may slide down one or the other of the sides of the guard E.
F are leaves or plates, which are pivoted at their upper edges to the sides of the box A,above the lower edges of, the guard E, and parallel .with said guard. The leaves or plates are held forward in inclined positions by the springs G, attached to the sides of the box- Aq and pressing against the outer sides of said leaves Vor plates I?.
His an angular or V-shaped guard, similar to the guard E, and pivoted at its angle to the sides ol' the box A, directly beneath the said guard E, above-the lower edges ofthe plates or-leaves F, and -parallel with the said leaves or plates F and guard E.
By this construction the fare, when dropped into the slit C, will slide down .one or the other ol' the slides ol the guard E, down one or the other of the plates or leaves F, and down one or the-other of the the sides of the guard H into the lower part of the box A.
If the`box should be turned to either side, the guards E and H drop against the plate or leaf I1 npon that side, andthus prevent the possibility of getting the fares back to the slit C after they have once reached the lower part of the box.
The said guards and pdates E F H also effeetually prevent the fare from being extracted by the use of instruments.
In openings in the lower parts of the sides ofthe box A are inserted glass plates I, through which the fares may be seen as they pass to the lower part ot' the fare-box.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The double pivoted angular guards E II, and springplates or leaves F G, in combination with each other and with thebox or case A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth..
