Specification of Letters Patent. te t June 0, 1
Applioation'flled November 28, 1909. serial-Na 530,809.
To, all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS V. ARoNsoN, of Newark, county of Essex, and
new and useful Improvements in Combination-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
'My invention relates to adjustable tools and consists in a combination wrench composed of two or more wrench blades adjustable upon each other and capable of being rigidly secured to each other in position for use through the simple means as hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a compact portable combination wrench containing two or more Wrench blades to fit different sized nut heads, wherein the blade desired to be used may be withdrawn from the gang and adjusted in the line of the other blades which operate as a handle.
By this construction, I secure not only a compact portable pocket wrench capable of fitting various sized nuts, but also one in which the wrench blades not in use operate as a handle for the one in use, securing increased leverage.
By my improved construction, when the wrench blade is properly adjusted, it is impossible for it to slip upon the other blades and further, when the clamp is released, the respective blades permit of the desired ready adjustment to any position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved combina tion wrench. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional viewtaken on line w-a: of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference refer to similar parts in the several Views, a, b, 0 and d indicate four wrench members which are adapted to lie fiat one upon another and each of which is provided with enlarged head portions and a' parallel faced handle part connecting said enlarged head portions, the handle parts of all of said members being of uniform width. The several wrench members are secured together by an open U-sha ed stra or yoke e which closely embraces t e han 1e parts of all of said members but permits their free transverse insertion in the yoke in assemew Jersey, have invented certain' bling the .tool, the side walls of said strap lying in close proximity to the parallel edges of the handle parts of the wrench members and projecting above the face of the topmost wrench member. Journaled in the upper ortion of the side walls of the strap or yoke e is an eccentric j which serves to clamp all of thewrench members tightly together and hold the same against any movement with res ect to each other. The eccentric is provide with an operating handle g and by loosening the eccentric by means of such handle, any one of the wrench members may be readily adjusted upon the other wrench members and either full extended, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, or partially extended and then secured.
By the use of yoke e in combination with the peculiar form of the wrench members having enlarged heads and a reduced portion connecting said heads, it will be apparent that while any of the Wrench members may be readily brought into use, it Will be impossible for any of the wrench members to become disengaged from the strap. It
will also be apparent that by the use of a coupling member of the character of the yoke e, the wrench members are held firmly against independent lateral movement and that the construction is such that the removal of any one of the wrench members is permitted, should it be necessary to replace the same or straighten a wrench blade if the same should be slightly twisted.
I claim:
1. A combination wrench comprising a plurality of independently sliding members having enlarged heads at their opposite ends and similar parallel faced handle parts, an open U-shaped strap closely embracing the handle parts of said wrench members and extending above the topmost wrench memher, and an eccentric journaled in the side tive position, and means for clamping theblades together in any position comprising an open yoke or holder and a cam pivoted in said holder and provided with a hand lever operable either forwardly or rearwardly with reference to the tool projected for operation. l
'3. A combination tool, comprising a series of blades with straight parallel sides and enlarged ends, each provided with a tool at each end and adapted to slide longitudinally upon each other, whereby either end of any blade may be projected into 0perative position and means for clamping the blades together in any position comprlsing an open yoke or holder adapted to receive said blades and contact with said parallel sides, the ends of the yoke projecting beyond the blades, transversely, and a cam pivoted in the ends of said yoke, said cam than to either side thereof, whereby when said cam lever is turned against the blades in either direction, the cam hea'd will be brought into position to securely clamp the blades together.
This specification signed and witnessed this 27th day of November, 1909. l LOUIS V. ARONSON.
