MEMORANDUM AND RECORDING DEVICEl FOR USE WITH TELEPHONES.
Specification of Letters l atent.
Patented June 13, 1911.
Application filed July 22, 1908. Serial No. 444,783.
To all wiwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ULYssEs GRANT CAVE?- Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Memorandum and Recording Devices for Use with Telephones; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference vmarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view" of the invention, with the rod supports engaged therewith and partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention with the hinged bottom shown in dropped posi-;
tion. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line of the spring strips for regulating the paper feed, and showing the key in position. Fig. at is a cross section on the line m w Fig. 3. 5 is a similar view with the hinged bottom in dropped position. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6--6 Fig. Fig. 7 is a front view of the invention as applied to a desk phone. Fig. 8 is a perspective detail view of the inner frame plate. Fig. 9 is a perspective detail View showing the lock ing devices, the adjacent parts being shown as broken away Fig. 10 is a side view of the invention as applied for application to a wall ph0ne.- Fig. 11 is a front view of the invention as adapted for application to a shelf phone.
The invention relates to memorandum and recording devices for use with telephones, and it consists in the novel construc tion andcombinations of parts as hereinafter setfforth.
In thef aceompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates a supporting and inclosing frame consisting of a body 5, having side frame pieces I), b, providedwith circular end enlargements b b, an upperplatform plate [2,, having upward extending part-cylindrical end portions 72/, h; overtying said enlargements, and a bottom 0, ha "ingdownward extending part-cylindrical end portions 0", 0*, underlying said enlargements, and having hinged connection at its rear end at 0, with said frame, said'bottom having a spring strip 01, provided with a right angle lug or projection cl, which is capable of springing or snapping home across the top of a transverse bar 6, of the body, to secure the bottom in closed position. A key e is used to push back the spring strip (i, to release the bottom when required. I
f, and f, are the rollers which lit in journal bearings in the end enlargements, being located centrally thereof.
The paper supply roll is wound with two sheets of paper as shown, although three sheets or more may be used if preferred, the end portions thereof passing through trans verse slot 9, of the body section over the. platform plate it, thereof, said end portions passing within the body section again at its forward end through transverse slot g, .the lower sheet being wound around the forward roller f, for recording purposes and the upper sheet passing through transverse slot 2', located between the part-cylindrical end portions at the forward end of the frame. The slots 9, and i, are so located with respect to each other that the memorandum or upper sheet of the paper will have a bend formed therein, whereby-when the end portion of this upper sheet is pulled outward a tension or pressure will be exerted thereby upon the forward or recording roller to cause the same to positively rotate and wind the lower recording sheet of paper therearound.
j, is an inner frame plate having trans verse hollow cylindrical strengthening ribs extending upward therefrom. The inner frame plate is inserted from below within the body section, the hinged. bottom being first dropped to allow of such insertion, when a longitudinal pin is, is engaged with perforations of upward extending lugs 7c, is, of'the inner frame plate at one side thereof. Upward extending lugs Z, Z, of said plate at the opposite side thereof and at right angles to the lugs 70, 7c, extend up- 1-00 ward between the side portion m, of the body and inward extending lugs m, struck therefrom. Thus when the inner frame plate is inserted into'position within the body and the pin is, passed into position, said plate is secured rigidly in place.
The pin 70, which is of roller character having journal bearings a, n, at the ends thereof, forms a carrying roller for the carbon paper, which passes from sald roller at the outsidethereof downward and around the lower edge 0, of side portion of the body, upward at the outside of said portion 0, transversely across the platform plate between the recording and memorandum sheets, down at the inside of side portion at, of the body through longitudinal slot miof the platform plate, thence around the lower edge of side portion m, and up at the outside thereof.
The position of the carbon sheet as stated is secured by the upward extending side portions 0 0 of the bottom, which lie at the outside of the upward extending portions of the carbon sheet in close relation to the side portions m, and 0, of the body, intervals m and 0 being left between the parts 0 '0 and m,- and 0, for this purpose. These upward extending side portions also serve to close the joint between the hinged bottom and the side frame pieces.
Openings p, p, are provided in the side portion of the body, and in one upward extending side portion 0?, of the bottom, said openings being in alinement with each other and with the hollow bracing cylinder extensions of the inner frame plate. Supporting arms 9, g, of transverse character may thus be engaged with said openings and gagement at their outer ends with the standard of the desk phone.
In order to regulate the movement or feed of the paper sheets from the supply roll, spring strips 1, 1, are attached to the rear cylindrical end .enlargement of the body and extend at their free lower ends 1", 9", (which are provided with knobs or projections for this purpose) into engagement with a longitudinally extending line of perforations 8, of the paper.
The inventionmay be detached from its supports and carried about by the driver or solicitor for use, or the device may be detached and sent while locked to the central oiiice. a
Having described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1S2" I 1: In a-device of the class described, a

4. A device of the class described, having a platform plate, upper forward and rear transverse slots at the opposite ends of said plate, forward and rear paper roll spindles, and a third transverse slot at the opposite side of the forward paper roll spindle from the upper forward slot at one end of the platform plate.
5. A device of the class described, having platform plate upper forward and rear transverse slots at the opposite ends of said plate, forward and rear paper rolls, and a third transverse slot at the opposite side of the forward paper roll from theupper forward slot at one end of said platform plate, the rear paper roll having'a double layer of paper passing therefrom over said platform eeeeee third transverse slot whereby the lower paper layer is caused to ii /ind upon the forward paper roll as the end portion of the upper paper layer is withdrawn from the device.
6. In a device of the class described, a body section having end enlargements, a hinged bottom, paper rolls in said enlarge- V ments,'a longitudinal carbon sheet r011 witiiin said body seetion, said hinged bottom having" upward extending side portions 10- oated at each side of the side portions of the body section and separated therefrom by narrow intervais.
7. In a device of the dose described a body section having end enlargements, a, hinged bottom, paper rolls Within said en- 7 being adapted for iargeinents, a longitudinal carbon sheet roii within said body section, said body section passage of the carbon sheet transversely across the some down one side at the inside thereof and up one's'ide at the outside thereof, said hinged. bottom having an upward extending side W211i lo slde portion of the A outed at one side of the body section which the carbon and separated from said side narrow interval.
In testimony whereof I ofiix my signa tnre in presence of two Wit-11653388" ULY'SSES GRANT CAVE.
