DEVICE FOR REGISTERING RAILWAY-TRAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 690,366, dated December 31, 1901.
Application filed March 29, 1901. Serial No. 53,411. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. GRANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver,- in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado,l have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Registering Railway-Trains; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention relates to a class of registers adapted to be used by conductors and engineers or trainmen in general in lieu of the book which now universally provides means for registering trains.
The object of my invention is to provide a register for railway-trains that Will be a safeguard against the registering of a train on the wrong day, as but one days space is exposed, insuring safety and preventing serious accidents, which occur by mistakes made in registering trains.
I attain the above objects by the construction outlined in the drawings, in which#- Figure 1 is an isometrical view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the interior construction. Fig. 3 is a sectional view along line ct d of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end View showing the end piece dropped down. Fig. 5 is a modification of the means for inclosing the mechanism surrounding the ends of the rollers.
A represents the baseof the device, which is constructed of wood or any other suitable material. This base-board is attached to the table by means of a thumb-screw or bolt, (designated by A'.) The box or cap of the device (indicated by B) is hinged to the baseboard by means of the hinges represented by A2, A3, and Al. A portion of each end of the box or cap is constructed in the form of a door and hinged to the main part. One of these ends is designated by B and is attached to the main part of the box or cap B by means of the hinges B2 and B3. The other end (indicated by B4) is hinged to the main cap by means of the hinges represented by B5 and B6. Any suitable device can be provided for locking or securing these ends to the main part of the box or cap. A metallic strip (designated by B7) is provided around the top edge of the box. A metal cross-piece (designated by B8) is secured to the edge `piece B7. For` the purpose of preventing the hereinafter-described strip of paper D sagging and also to provide a rigid surface for the purpose of supporting the paper when. being Written upon, a plate or board (represented by B9 in Fig. 3) is mortised into the side pieces of the box. It is securely glued or otherwise fastened to the said side pieces. Rollers (designated by O C) are provided and are constructed with a longitudinal slot and have flanges or collars (designated by C and C2) provided one at each end.
D represents the continuous sheet of paper which is prin ted with the desired blank form, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The paper is provided with a space for each day of the month and is rolled upon one of the rollers.
EE represent rollers, one placed at each end of the box. These rollers E E are made of a less diameter than those indicated by C C, as they act simply as a guide and support or idlers for the paper. The rollers upon which the paper is placed (designated by O O) are journaled intol the sides of the box or cap and have one end provided with any suitable ratchet, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The rollers O C can be removed from the box by pushing the hook H (shown in Fig. 2) out of engagement with an indentation I in the edge of the plate J. The plate can then be swung on the screw K, shown in the'upper right-hand corner of the plate, and the shaft of the roller lowered through the slot L in the side of the box B and out of a recess M in the opposite side of the box. The iiange on the said rollers at the ends Where the ratchet is placed is also constructed so that it is removable, thus facili- ,tating the removal of the continuous sheet of paper from the roller at the end of the month, after it has all been used for registrations. Two caps or hoods (designated by B10 and B11) are provided and hinged or otherwise secured to the side of the box. These hoods or caps are adapted to cover the ratchet mechanism operating in connectionvwith the rollers CC.

In some cases the ratchets may be dispensed with, and then ears or bosses, as shown in Fig. 5, are supplied instead of the said hinged hoods or caps. Aleaf-spring (designated by F) is provided and secured to the plate or board forming the top of the box or to a suitable transverse support, (indicated by F in Fig. 2 of the drawings.) The ends of this leafspriug operate upon the rolls of the paper, thus keeping it in the proper tension and preventing it from becoming loose or from unrolling. The metal cross-piece (designated by B8 in Fig. l .of the drawings) divides the space on top of the box into equal sections, one section of which is fitted with a glass,(des ignated by Gin Fig. l of the drawings.) The utility of this provision will be hereinafter fully described. The metal strip or band (designated by B7) which is provided around the edge of the box, as fully illustrated, in Fig. l of the drawings, extends inwandover the inner edge of the box, as shown in Fig. 3, The edge of the strip is beveled so thatit fits snugly upon the glass. It is now obvious that when a device for reg istering railway-trains has been constructed according to the foregoing description and the illustrations herewith, the successful operas tion of same will be as follows: The device, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings,A is secured to a desk or some suitablesubstantial contrivance in the statiom rEhe space provided on the continuous sheet of paper is dated for the day begining with either midnight or noon, as desired. The diderent' registi-ations during the day are made by the coud'uctors and engineers on the paper for trains in both directions, as fully illustrated in Fig. 1. When the time for changing the space has arrived, the simple operation of applying a suitable key to the end of the axis of t-he roller, as fully illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, provides means for turning the roller which draws the paper containing the registrations underthe glass, (designated by G in Fig. l of the drawings.) The utility of this provision will be manifestlycomprehensible, as it provides means for consulting the registrations for the day just past, yet prevents them from being changed. At the end of the month when the blank spaces are all filled the roll of paper can very readily be drawn from the roller and tilled for future reference.
After having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, with the manner of constructing and applying the same, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for registering railway-trains, consisting of a suitable box hinged to a baseboard, the ends of the box provided with hinged parts adapted to be opened, the rollV ers provided with flanges on the ends, the said rollers slotted to provide means for fastening the ends of the paper, the guide-roll` ers provided at the ends of the box, a plate or board mounted near the `top of said box, and a tension-spring attached to said plate or board and adapted to bear against said flanged rollers.
2. In a device for registering railway-trains, the combination of a suitable box hinged to a base-board and provided with a glass, cover ing half of the top., a suitable support or plate mounted near the top of said box, two fianged rollers jpurnaled iu the sides of said box, a continuous; sheet olipaper mounted thereon, and, a tensionspriiu g attached to said su pport or plate and: adapted to bear against said ii'angedrollers, substantially as specified.-

5. A device for registering railway-trains, consisting of the box the ends of which are hinged adapted to be opened providing means for adjustmentof the paper, the large rollers provided with elongated slots by means` of Ice" IIO"
