SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,448, dated June 13,1893.

Be it known that I, HOMER T. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in .the county of J eiferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Autographic Register, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in roller tablet cabinets, my object being to provide simple and efiective means for holding two or more sheets, or strips, of paper (with the interposed carbon sheets) in place, while operating the rolls or spools, when one of said sheets or strips is reeled upon a roll or spool and the remaining sheet, or sheets, are loose at one end and are adapted to be carried out of the'cabinet to be torn 01f as used. I attain this object by the use of asmall, transversely disposed pressure-roll, located at the lower side of the writing-plate and adjacent to the free edges of those strips which are torn off as used, said pressure-roll being arranged so as to act in conjunction with a guide or antifriction roll over which the sheets or strips of paper pass previous to their separation.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for securing carbon, or duplicating, sheets of any desired number in position to be traversed, respectively, by the sheets or strips of paper, without interfering with the operation of the latter, either in reeling or unreeling. I attain this object by providing the folding frame which closes upon the writing-plate, and beneath which the sheets or strips pass, with narrow shoulders, clothed with rubber, and adapted to bear firmly upon the writing-plate and bite the edges of the carbon, or duplicating, sheets.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will be mentioned hereinafter in the course of the following description, and the novel features will. be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings which accompany this description, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a roller tablet cabinet embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view, through the pressureroll. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the folding frame, inverted; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the pressure-roll. Fig. 6 is a sectional detail.
The case, A, of the cabinet is rectangular in form, being provided at about the center of its top with a writing-plate, B, over which closes the folding frame, 0. The upper end of the cabinet is closed by a hinged lid, D, and the lower end thereof is fitted with a glass-plate, E, through which may be viewed the interior of the cabinet. This glass plate is in the same plane as the writing-plate, the interval between the lower edge of the writing-plate and the adjacent upper edge of the glass-plate being occupied by the transverse guide or anti-friction roll, F, the periphery of which projects slightly above the plane of the writing plate and glass-plate, as will be seen clearly by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The supply spool, G, is mounted transversely in the case, near its upper end, two or more sheets or strips of paper being reeled thereon, which sheets or strips, after leaving said spool pass over the upper edge of the writing-plate, traverse the latter longitudinally, and pass over the guide -roll, F, at which point the strips separate; one (the lower strip) passing to the receiving-spool, H, mounted near the lower end of the case, and the remaining strip, or strips, passing out upon the upper side of the glass-plate.
The pressure-roll, K, is mounted at its ends in bearings in the vertical ears, L L, at opposite sides of the case, and is provided with a soft rubber sheath or casing, M, which bears upon the surface of the paper directly opposite the guide-roll, above described. No means of adjustment or yielding attachments are employed in connection with my improved pressure-roll. The cars in which it is mounted are attached firmly to the sides of the easing of the cabinet, the only elasticity and pressure required being furnished by the rubber sheath, which, bearing firmly in the direction of the axis of the guide-roll, holds the upper or loose strips of paper in place and causes them to feed forward with the lower strip, as the latter is reeled upon the receiv- ICC the depending flanges, I? P, which fit close to the sides of the writing-plate, and adjacent to said flanges are small shoulders, Q Q, adapted to bear firmly upon the surface of the writing-plate adjacent to the depending flanges. These shoulders are clothed With rubber, or other elastic material, and the sheets of carbon, or duplicating, paper are spread or extended across the writing-plate and are engaged at their edges by the clothed shoulders and thereby held firmly in position while the strips of paper traverse the plate and pass between the carbon sheets.
In the drawings, three strips of writing-paper are shown, the lower strip, 7", being reeled upon the receiving-spool after passing over the wi-itingplate, and the intermediate and upper strips, 1* 1", being carried out, under the cutting edge, T, upon the upper surface of the glass-plate. The carbon sheets are designated by letters, 8 s.
The printing or marking mechanism, U, which is arranged within the case adjacent to the supply spool, comprises essentially the spring-actuated, pivoted frame, U, carrying the type roller, U, which is held by the tension springs, to, in contact with the surface of the paper upon the supply-spool, and the inking-roller, V. A set-screw, V, engaged at its inner end in an aperture in the side of the frame of the printing mechanism, operates in a slot in the side of the case, and by means of said set-screw the frame carrying the typeroller may be locked out of contact with the supply spool. The strips are reeled upon the supply-spoolin such a direction as to cause the upper sheet to come in contact with the printing-roll.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The parts being arranged as above described, with the end of the under strip engaged with the receiving-spool, the edges of the intermediate and upper strips'projecting under the cutter and lying upon the surface of the glass-plate, and the carbon, or duplicating, sheets adjusted as described and held in position by the shoulders of the foldingframe, the receiving spool is rotated by means of the key or handle, W, to bring fresh paper within the frame and over the writing-plate and project the upper strips sutficiently to enable them to be torn off as the bills are made out. The impression of the bill, or account, is made upon the upper surface of the lower strip, and it will be evident that in order to review the record of sales, in order to transfer to the books, or for any other purpose, it is merely necessary to rotate the supply-spool by means of its key or handle, W, this key or handle being preferably detachable in order that it may be carried by a responsible party, to prevent the spools from being reversed by any except such party. As the spools are reversed the record upon the lower strip will be visible through the glassplate, and thus obviate the necessity of removing the carbon sheets.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In an autographic register, the combination with a wi'itingplate, supply and receiving spools, of a pivoted folding-frame, 0, provided with depending flanges engaging opposite edges of the plate, and depending shoulders adjacent to the flanges bearing upon the surface of the plate to engage the lateral edges of duplicating sheets, the sides of the frame being extended inward beyond the shoulders to guide the paper, locking set-screws carried by said flanges, a pressureroll mounted in bearings fixed at one end of the writing-plate adjacent to the pivotal point of the folding-frame, and a hood carried by and integral with the folding-frame to cover the pressure roll and provided with a cutting-edge, substantially as specified.
2. In an autographic register, the combination with a writing-plate, supply and receiving rolls, duplicating sheets arranged upon the plate, and means to hold said sheets in place, of unconnected anti-friction and pressure rolls between which the strips pass after leaving the writing-plate, said rolls being mounted in fixed bearings, and the pressureroll being provided with a soft rubber sheath or covering whereby the pressure necessary to prevent slipping of the rolls or of the paper is produced, substantially as specified.
3. In an autographic register, the combination with the casing or cabinet having a fixed writing-plate, a hinged closure D, and a glass plate in the same plane with the writingplate, receiving and supply-rolls, of apivoted folding-frame, an anti-friction roll arranged in an interval betweenthe adjacent edges of the writing-plate and the. glass plate, with its upper side in the plane of the upper surfaces of said plates, a pressure-roll mounted above the anti-friction roll in fixed bearings upon the casing or cabinet and provided with a IIO soft rubber sheath, and a hood carried by the I folding-frame to cover the pressure-roll and having its rear edge sharpened to form a cutting edge, substantially as specified.
4.. In a roller tablet cabinet, the combination with the supply and receiving spools carrying a strip or strips of paper which traverse a writing'plate, of a printing mechanism having a spring-actuated supporting-frame and a type-roller mounted in said frame and held thereby in contact with the paper upon the supply-spool, and the set-screw engaged in and carried by said supporting-frame and operating in a slot in the case of the cabinet, whereby the type-roller may be locked out of contact with the paper upon the supply-spool, substantially as specified.
