AUTOGRAPHIC REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 593,532, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed October l, 1892. Serial Nin/41460. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUTHER C. FARMER, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Autographic Registers,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to autographic registers or sales recorders of the class in which several sheets of paper are employed in connection with carbon sheets for reproducing the original slip or entry, one or more of the sheets of paper being brought into position Where they may be torn off of the sheet while one of the sheets is wound upon a suitable roll within the casing and makes a permanent record of all the entries.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine of this class that shall be simple in construction, so that I am enabled to furnish it to the users at a very moderate price.
My invention consists generally in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a sales recorder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View with the cover of the 3o casing removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one end of the casing. Figni is a transverse vertical section of the upper part of the machine.
In the drawings, 2 represents the casing which may be of any suitable size and construction and which is preferably formed of the independent sides, bottom and end pieces which may be made of cast metal and which may be secured together by means of suitable lugs 3 and screws 5. At one end and at the top the casing is provided with the inwardly projecting plates 7 preferably extending from each side partially across the casing. The casingl is also provided with the 45 ledges 9v upon which is supported the cross plate 11, The cover 13 is hinged preferably to the casing at one end thereof by means of the pivots 15. This cover is arranged with the sharp rear edge 17 that is sufficiently above the plates 7 to permit the paper to pass below the cover and above the plates 7. The cover is also a sufficient distance above the plate 1l to permit the paper to pass above the plate l1 and beneath the cover. Said cover is preferably eut away in that portion which comes directly over saidA plate Il. I provide two rolls, one a supply roll upon which all of the papieris Wound, and the other a roll upon which the strip of paper upon which the record has been made is wound. The roll 19 which is the supply roll is supported in bearings upon the swinging frame 2l, said frame being pivotally supported upon the shaft 23 and engaged by the spring 25 that is also secured upon said shaft.' The frame 27 also mounted upon said shaft projects therefrom in the opposite direction and supports the roll 29, said frame being also engaged by the spring 25.
In operation the three or more strips of paper are wound upon the roll 19 which is supported in the swinging frame 21 and by said frame held up against the under surface of the cover 13. The three strips of paper are carried from the roll 19 over the plate 11 and the under strip is wound upon the roll 29 while the other strips are carried out under the rear end of the cover 13, the two lower strips being carried under sheets of carbon 3l located upon top of the cross plate 11. The rolls 19 and 29 are held by their spring supports with sufficient friction against the under surface of the cover of the case to hold them at all times in proper position and in using the machine a suitable entry is made by Writing upon the upper sheet of paper directly over the plate 1l. Then by grasping the two upper sheets of paper While they project under the plate 13 said sheets are pulled forward the desired distance and at the same time the under strip is wound upon the roll 29. The carbons remain in position being preferably elarnped in place by the ledges 33 on the edge of the cover. After the paper strips have been drawn out a suiiicient distance they are torn off by the cutter 17 and one of the tickets thus formed may be given to the customer and the other iiled with the cashier and at the same time a duplicate of this entry will be made upon the strip that is Wound upon the roll 29. As the roll of paper upon the roll'29 increases that upon the roll 19 will decrease but both rolls Will at all times be held with the proper amount of friction against the underside of the cover 13.
I also prefer to provide the opening 18 at the end of the casing just beneath the edge 17 of the covergand to provide theopening 2O in. the cover as shown in Fig. 3. This permits the insertion of the ngers and thumb of the operator for the purpose of readily grasping the ends of the two strips of paper that are carried out under the end of the cover.
It will be understood that suitable friction rolls may if preferred be arranged so as t0 bear upon the paper at the under surface of the cover.
A suitable lock 2S may be provided on the casing for locking the cover in position.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I`
spring bearings supporting said roll, avreceiving roll, and spring bearings supportlng said roll, substantially as described.
3. The combination With the casing, of the supply roll arranged therein and mounted upon yielding bearings, a receiving roll the cross-plate 11 arranged between said rolls and over Which said strips are adapted to pass, and the cover, provided with .an opening arranged. above said cross-plate, substantially as specied.
4. The combination, with the casing provided With the cross-plate and with the cover 13 having an opening arranged over said cross-plate, of the knife-edge 17 arranged at the end of the cover, the shaft 23, the frames 21 and 27 pivotally supported upon said shaft, the spring 25 engaging said frames and the rolls 19 and 29 mounted upon said frames, substantially as described.
5. The combination with the casing and the supply roll, of the roll adapted to receive one of the recording strips, and means for hold- `ing said receiving roll against the other strips as they are withdrawn from the casing, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of September, A. D. 1892.
LUTHER o. FARMER.
In presence of- F. SINON, f A. C. PAUL.
