AUTOGRAPHIC REGISTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1914.
Application filed April 24, 1913. Serial No. 763,360.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ULYSSES GRANT CAVE, a citizen of the United States, resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Autographic Registers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the sales register. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig.
l is a detail side view of the hollow casing with one side of the casing removed. Fig. 5 a detail fragmentary section on the line 5--5, Fig. 1. Fig. (3 is a detail section on the line 6--6 Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the platform plates.
The invention has relation to autographic registers, having for its object to provide an improved device of this character for use in registering memorandums and sales in mercantile and other transactions, and the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 1, designates a hollow frame or casing having a platform plate 2, and two rotary spindles 3 and 1, upon one of whichis placed the paper supply or feed roll 5, and upon the other of which the paper upon which the record is made is wound to constitute the record roll 6. p
The paper passes from the supply roll outwardly of the casing through transverse slot 7, at one end of the platform plate, traverses this plate longitudinally, and the outer sheet of paper is at its other or rear end held down to the plate by means 8, consisting preferably of a transverse bar or strip struck upward from the end plate 8, of the casing. After the record is made the outer paper sheet is torn off at a straight edge, preferably constituted by a separate part S). The inner sheet of paper, upon which the record is made by an intermediate carbon sheet between the two paper sheets, passes into the casing again at the rear. end thereof through transverse slot 10, passing then re versely back under the platform plate to the record spindle upon which it is wound,
the record spindle being caused to turn with and in the opposite direction to that of the supply spindle, preferably by means of the gearing connection 11.
The platform plate is ren'lovably connected with the casing, preferably by means of angular inward turned lateral flanges 12, having perforations 13, engaging transverse rods 14-, of the casing, said casing having one side 15 thereof, removable, the other side 16, carrying the transverse rods 1 1, and theside 15, having perforations 1G, engaging the outer ends of said rods, so that after the side 15 is removed endwise from engagement with the rods, the platform plate which is held in place by the side 15, may he slid laterally from engagement with said rods.
The transverse slot 7, is located between the forward end of the platform plate and the end or corner plate 8, of the casing, the lower paper sheet passing around a guide rod located adjacent to said slot, and consisting preferably of one of the rods 1%; and the outer paper sheet passing around a guide rod 18, separated from and located adjacent to the rod 14, the end plate 17. being located above or outside the plane of the platform plate, and the guide rods or anti-friction rollers thereupon being located partly above or outside the plane ofsaid plate, so that the two paper sheets may first pass around the guide rods and afterward both in superposed position pass, in a substantially straight manner, through the transverse slot 7, and over the platform plate.
The guide rods will keep the paper sheets if separated from each other to avoid contact and adherence until these sheets pass from the guide rods to the platform plate. And inasmuch as the guide rods or anti-friction rollers upon said rods have their outer surfaces located above the outer surface of the platform plate, frictional adhesion of the paper sheets with the carbon sheet will also be avoided.
The carbon sheet is preferably coiled in a roll at one end and the roll placed in a laterally-open lateral recess 19, of the easing, one .of the downturned or inturned sides of the platforn'l plate serving to normally close the open. side of this recess, so that when the platform plate is removed, the carbon roll may be placed in or removed from its recess.
The carbon sheet passes from its roll transversely over the platform plate between the inner and outer paper sheets and is at its other end preferably held down by means of a rod or strip 20, pivoted at one end tothe frame 21, and acting to clamp the end of the carbon to the side of the casing at 22. ,Vhen this pivoted strip is turned to one side, the free end of the carbon is disengaged from the clamp and the carbon roll, in position in the frame recess, may be unwound to provide another length of carbon paper to take the place of the old carbon.
In order to provide against undue strain upon or against breaking the paper sheets due to the different comparative sizes of the paper supply roll and the record roll as the supply roll diminishes in size and the record roll increases in size, means are provided consisting preferably of a spring 22, carried by the pinion 11, said spring having frictional engagement with the end 23, of the record spindle, to turn the record spindle when the pinion is turned by the gear 2%, of the supply spindle, the frictional engagement serving to turn the record spindle as required at all times, but yielding under strain as the sizes of the two rolls vary.
It is preferred to use three superposed sheets of paper, wound upon the supply spindle, the two outer sheet-s passing over two of the guide rods 18, located usually beneath and guarded by the end plate 17, of the casing, and all three sheets of paper taking an angular bend around the guide rods and from the guide rods passing in a subst antial'ly straight manner through the transverse slot 7, and over the platform plate. This will avoid unnecessary bends in the paper and consequent frictional strain thereupon. When the three sheets of paper are employed, the carbon sheet will be carbonized upon both sides and will be located between the intermediate sheet and the lower or record sheet, the record impression be-- ing made in positive upon the lower sheet, and the impression upon the intermediate sheet being made in negative.
Means are provided to preventlifting of the two outer paper sheets and the insertion of a card between the intermediate paper sheet and the lower sheet which would prevent the carbon impression being made upon the lower sheet and enable a false entry to be made without record or notice thereof, this means resisting any backward movement of the middle sheet, and consisting preferably of pointed spring prongs 25, having outward projection through transverse slot 26, below the bar 8, of the end plate 8,
the outer paper sheets passing under the bar 8, 1n frictional contact with said prongs,
which present in the direct-ion of the movement of the paper, so that should the paper sheets be moved reversely for the purpose stated, the prongs will engage and tear the paper, serving as a notice that the paper has been tampered with.
The hollow casing is preferably of rectangular prismatic form and provided with duplicate platformplates upon the four sides thereof, and with duplicate record and paper supply spindles and duplicate end plates at the four corners. The other duplicate parts needed are also provided.
The hollow rectangular prismatic casing is rotatably mounted upon a base 27, said base having at its forward end an extension 28, serving as a hand rest and support in making the notations upon the paper. Means are provided to hold each platform plate constituting a side of the casing as it comes uppermost in line with the extension 28, in the rotation of the casing upon the base, said means consisting preferably of a pin 29, seated in the side of the base at 80, and having engagement in turn with lateral recesses 31, of the casing. hen the casing is to be rotated to bring another side and platform plate thereof uppermost, for entry of a sale of a different class, the pin is pulled outwardly against the tension of its spring as, cess 31, comes in register with the pin, which will then have automatic engagement with the recess. Or when the casing is to be removed from theba-se, the pin is turned until a lateral extension 33, thereof, has stop engagement with the side of the base to hold the pin released. When the casing is replaced, the pin is turned to release it from the stop engagement, the spring carrying the pin again inward 1nto engagement with said recess.
Means are provided to lock the casing to the base consisting preferably of a pivoted plate 34, engaging over the pivot projection 25, of the casing, and having a lock connection with the base at 36.
