My invention relates to certain improvements in cases for holding sales check slips, for making duplicate copies of writings for the use of salesmen in stores, and in which a record strip for the totals is stored away in the case, theentire device being arranged to be carried in the pocket and to take the place of the memorandum sales slip books in common use.

My improvements consist of a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly pointed out and claimed.

In the drawings:-Figure l is a perspective view of my improvements with the top cover open. Fig. 2, is a bottom plan view of the device with the external casing removed. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section taken just within the right hand side of the case. Fig. 4, is a central longitudinal section of same. Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the carbon sheet for the duplicate sales check, showing the method of binding. Fig. 6, is a similar view of the carbon sheet for the record strip.

The sales slips and working parts are inclosed in a suitable rectangular case of any proper material, in which A, A, are the sides, B, B,,the ends, and O the bottom. The upper edges of the side pieces A are turned over at right angles to form flanges a, a, and upon these flanges the top cover D slides as will readily be understood. A lug p on this cover D, engages with a spring pawl r, to prevent the cover from being slid ofif of the case in ordinary use, although the pawl r, is arranged to be depressed whenever it" is desired to remove the cover.

Within the external casing is a frame work which supports and holds all of the working ment having journaled therein the rollers H, I. Upon this roller I, the record strip of paper b, is mounted.

A slot 0, is formed in the top, or writing tablet, F, through which the paper b, is fed over the lower end 61 of the writing tablet F, around the guide roller e, and on to the receiving roller H, while f, is a partition separating the dispensing from the receiving roll.

The sales slips for the device consist of two long strips of paper interfolded with each other in zigzag or bellows folds, one strip being intended as the original, and the other as the duplicate sales strip. These strips are placed in the larger compartment of the case, so that the strips can be fed from the top of the pile and they are held in the compartment by a spring g. Two strips of carbon paper are employed, one to transfer the totals on to the record strip 2), and the'other to make a duplicate copy of the writing made on the uppermost strip. The salesstrips are fed around the guide roller h, and over the top of the writing tablet F. The lower strip of carbon paper 7c is of the same length and width as the lower portion of the writing tablet (1, while the upper strip of carbon paper Z, is of sufficient size to make a complete copy of the writing made on the uppermost or original strip. For the purpose of securing these carbon sheets I provide the lower carbon strip is with a non-carbonized sheet of Manila paper m (Fig. 6) so that the two sheets are of the same size, the lower most sheet however havingonlyits outerendkcarbonized. These two carbon sheets are provided with a stifi Manila border 8, at their upper ends and at the sides, so that as the strips of paper are drawn along the carbon paper will not tear and so that these carbon strips may be properly secured and held firmly in place, the carbon paper ordinarily being so thin as to be 5 readily torn unless thus bound. These Manila sides of the carbon paper are turned over the sides of the top plate or writing tablet F and secured by the bars L, L, which are pivoted to the sides E, E, of the inner [0 case. The lower most sheet of carbon paper 70, with its Manila extension on is first laid on the tablet F, so that the carbon portion of the sheet rests over the exposed portion of the record strip 1). The strip of paper it upon which the duplicate copies are to be made, is then drawn out and laid over the tablet, the other sheet of carbon paper Z placed over the same and the upper most strip of paper 19 is then brought down, the carbon sheets 20 being held down at the sides as above described by the bars L, L.

Mounted loosely on the spindle for the rollerI-I,is a pawl carrier M which carries the pawl t. This pawl engages with a ratchet wheel 10, mounted on the spindle of the roller H.

v, is a spring detent secured to the casing and with its outer end in engagement with this ratchet w, to hold it in the position it may be moved by the operation of the pawl carrier M, as heretofore described. This pawl carrier extends above the face of the tablet or top F and when the sliding cover D is slid back so as to close the case, the outer edge 5 of the cover comes in contact with the pawl carrier M and throws it back into the opening a in the end B of the cover. This movement of the pawl carrier M, causes the pawl 15 to engage its ratchet w and turn the receiving roller H a part of a revolution, just sufiicient to take up the portion of the record strip that has been written upon. As soon as the cover-D is again slid back to open the case for writing, a spring acting on the pawl 5 carrier M, returns it to its original position.

The operation of the device is exceedingly simple. After having been loaded as heretofore described, the salesman slides open the cover until the lug 19 comes in contact with the pawl r. The sales ticket is then written and the totals are transferred to the record strip, while a duplicate copy is made on the duplicate strip. The two strips of paper are then drawn out a proper distance and the salesman then closes the case by sliding shut the cover D. The outer edge of this cover I) is formed into a tearing edge where the two slips are severed from their respective strips upon this tearing edge. The act of shutting the cover as it will be seen,causes the receiving roller 1-1 for the record strip to revolve and present fresh record paper for the next operation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is

1. In a sales check case the combination substantially as described of a top or cover sliding on the sides of the case, roller for receiving a record strip of paper and means attached to said roller co-operating with said cover whereby the closing of said cover will operate the roller.

2. In a sales check case the combination substantially as described of a top or cover sliding on the sides of the case, roller for receiving a record strip of paper, ratchet on said roller, pivoted pawl carrier and pawl carried thereby in engagement with said ratchet said pawl carrier extending above the surface of the case when the cover is open and arranged to be operated by the cover in closing the same.

3. In a sales check case the combination with the case and writing tablet upon which the writings are made of a receiving roller for a record strip arranged to draw said strip over only a portion of said tablet and a sheet of non-carbonized material to cover said tablet, said sheet being provided with a tongue of carbon material extending only over the record strip portiomof said tablet, substantially as shown and described.

4:. In a sales check ease the combination with the case and writing tablet upon which the writings are made, of a sheet of carbon material extending over the face of said tablet stiff binding for said sheet at the front and side edges thereof, with means at the sides of the tablet to secure said sheet thereon, sub [00 stantially as shown and described.

5. In a sales check case, the combination with the case and writing tablet upon which the writings are made, of a receiving roller for a record strip arranged to draw said strip over [0 5 only a portion of said tablet, a sheet of carbon material extending over the face of said tablet and having its front and side edges bound with heavier material and a sheet of non-carbonized material lying nexttosaidtab- 11o let, said sheet being provided with a tongue of carbon material extending only over the record strip portion of said tablet with means at the sides of said tablet to secure said sheets thereon, substantially as shown and described.
