FRANK I-IOLROYD, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PURSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1911.
Application filed June 19, 1909. Serial No. 503,145.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HoLRoYD, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Purses, of which the following is a specification. L
This invention relates to improvements in purses and embraces t-he construction of a purse provided with means wher-eby the same may be partly orv wholly opened in such a manner as to protect the contents thereof.
The invention is carried out by providing a purse or hand bag with a plurality of oppositely disposed hooks and passing a supporting chain through the hooks in such a manner that the chain normally holds the hooks toward each other and the bag or purse closed and permits of the partial or entire opening of the bag, the chain being detachably secured to a part of the hooks.
The invention embraces certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the purse or hand bag showing the supporting chain raised to a vertical position and the bag held closed thereby, Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing the manner in which the supporting chain is connected to the bag or purse hooks, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional perspective view of a modied form of hook, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the modified hook in a closed position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l denotes a purse or hand bag having top reinforced portions 2 and 8, which are adapted to abut against each other and which carry a latch 4L, which may be of any approved pattern. Near the ends of the portions 2 and 3 hooks 5 and 6 are secured. rlhe hooks 5 are formed with closed eyes and are located on the portion 3 and the hooks 6 are formed with open eyes and are located on the `portion or plate 2. The hooks 5 occupy positions opposite to the hooks 6 and are connected together by a chain 7, which may be passed through the eyes of the hooks and is looped in two parallel portions above the hooks to be grasped by a hand. In order to effect a good connection between the chain and the hooks rings 8 are secured to the hooks andthe chain is passed through the rings. In this manner the supporting chain can slide on the rings and the purse or bag can be easily opened. When the chain or rings are directly connected to all the hooks the bag or purse can only be opened partly, but enough to permit the party holding the bag to have access to the contents thereof. When it is desired to wholly open the bag the chain is partly detached from the bag by disconnecting the same from the hooks 6.
The improved bag is held normally closed by the weight of the same upon the supporting chain when the same is over-filled, or when the latch 4; does not work properly.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modification of my invention comprising the combination of two engaging hooks 9 and 10. The hook 9 is formed split and is provided with an offset portion 9 and the outer peripheral surface thereof is formed fiat. The hook 9 is adapted to enterthe hook 10,which is also formed with an oifset portion 10. The hook 9a is provided with a split upturned end 9 whereby the supporting chain may be passed into and out of the eye thereof-or the connecting ring may be also passed into and out of the eye thereof. When the bag is closed the hook 9 is adapted to rest wholly in the hook l0 so that thetwo hooks form one compound hook.
Having described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a purse having top abutting portions, hooks having offsets thereon arranged on one of said top portions, said hooks having closed eyes, hooks on the other top portion having a split portion and an offset, said hooks being adapted to enter the first hooks, and a supporting chain looped in parallel portions above the hooks and slidable therethrough whereby the purse may be partly or wholly opened and the chain will operate to hold the top portions normally toward each other.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK HOLROYD.
