DISPLAY DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 21, 1910. 992,393, Patented May 23, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH EDWARD MGGABE AND FRANK ORIN FIELD, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
DISPLAY DEVICE;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23,1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH EDWARD Mo- CABE and FRANK ORIN FIELD, citizens of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of \Vashington, have invented a new and useful Display Device; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the art of display devices, and it more especially pertains to a new and useful form of any desired shape, so as to represent a foot, which may include a part of a leg, a hand, or a part of an arm, or any other anatomical part, adapted to be erected in a show-Window of a store, so as to disclose the kind and the style of various wearing apparel.
The main object of the invention is to provide a hollow transparent form to represent a foot or hand or any other part of a persons body, especially the foot, fitted with a metal cap and filled with liquid or other filler colored by means of dyes or other coloring matter, so as to display to the public the color of the hosiery in stock of a department store. The colored liquid appearing through the hollow glass form gives the effect of fine silk hose, and to assist in producing this effect, the outer surface may be ribbed or corrugated. It will be apparent, however, that the colored liquid may be changed at will, thereby producing any color hosiery. In the drawings, however, there is disclosed certain structural details, but in practical fields these details may require alterations, to which the applicants are entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended by the appended claim.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the form, representing a footand part of a leg, showing the metal cap screwed upon the top portion. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the form, showing the colored liquid therein and the detail structure of the form. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the base portion of the form.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the form as a whole, which comprises the upper portion 2, which represents the part of the foot 3, say for instance the instep thereof and a portion of the heel, and the upper part of the leg 1, and the base of the form which represents the toe portion of the foot and the heel. The base portion 5 of the form is recessed as shown at 6 from a short distance from the extreme toe portion of the base to the rear portion or the heel thereof. The shouldered portion 7 of the toe portion of the base, which is formed by the said recess 6 is provided with a socket 8, adapted to receive a cylindrical lug or projection 9 of the upper hollow portion of the form, in order to hold the upper portion of the form and the base in their proper relation to one another. In practice the base portion of the form is to be constructed of wood or other fiber, while the upper portion of the form is to be constructed of glass or any other transparent material, so that the colored liquid therein may be plainly visible from the exterior.
The upper surface of the recess of the base of the preferred form of the invention is slightly curved as shown at 11, thus providing means for preventing lateral displacement of the upper portion and the base of the form. Furthermore in the preferred form of the device, to prevent the upper portion of the form from moving rearwardly of the base the elements 12 and 13 are provided, as disclosed in Fig. 2. V
The upper portion of the form adjacent its extreme top is provided with a plurality of threads 14, adapted to be engaged by the threaded cap 15, there being a rubber washer or gasket between the shoulder 16 of the upper portion of the form and the cap, to prevent leakage of the liquid in the form. As shown at 17 the outer surface of the form, for instance the upper part is corrugated, so that together with the coloring upon the interior of the form, silk hosiery will be represented. The colored liquid may be changed at any time by removing the cap.
When the form is erected in a show-window, the form is filled with the desired color, and the foot of the form together with the base is inserted in any style of shoe, whether a high shoe or a low quarter, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When inserting the foot in the shoe the elements cooperating between the base and the upper portion of the form, prevent movement of the upper tain a colored fluid, thus constituting means combined with the said corrugations for rep-- resenting silk hose.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH EDWARD MOCABE. FRANK ORIN FIELD.
