FRITZ O. VON TOBEL, (NOW LBYJ UDIGIAL'CH-AN GE GE NAME';MARCELLE;JOHN 'HARDING,')
OE NYEW YORK, N. Y.
HOLDER FOR FLAGS AND OTHER ARTICLESA Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 31,1918. Serial No, 260,512.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ O. VON TOBEL,
. a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, re-
siding at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Holders for Flags and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for flags and other articles, and has for its object to construct such an article in an ornamental and attractive form; to provide means formed with said holder whereby the latter may always be maintained in itsnormal position, and even when tilted will return thereto; and also to provide eflicient means for holding flags or other articles therein.
A further object of my invention is to construct such holders in sectional form, with means for removably securing such sections together, and to provide upon the exterior of the holder a suitable panel adapted to contain lettering or words referring to the holder or the articles displayed thereon, or otherwise.
These and other objects of my invention are set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawing, which forms a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of one of my holders showing flags supported thereby; and,
Fig. 2 is a central, vertical, sectional view of the holder.
My holder may be molded, cast, or otherwise formed of any suitable material, and of any desired form or shape. I prefer however to construct it in the form of a globe or hemisphere as shown in the drawing.
I form the holder in two sections or hemispheres, 10, 11, the lower section having an inturned, upwardly projecting flange 12 at its top, which is exteriorly screw-threaded at 13, and with an inwardly projecting opening or thimble 14 centrally disposed in its bottom, and adapted for use when the holder is to be used upon a standard. The top, or crown, portion of the upper section may be thickened as shown in Fig. 2 to reinforce it against the bending or buckling strain of the articles mounted thereon.
Heavy material, such as lead, 15, forming a weight, is secured in the interior of the section 10 at the bottom thereof, the thimble 14 aiding in holding the same in place.
The upper section 11 is formed with a downwardly projecting flange 16, which is provided with interior screw-threads 17, adapted to engage the threads 13 upon the flange 12 of the lower section to hold the said section together while permitting of their separation when desired.
The exterior of the flange 16 is formed into a panel 20, ribs 18, 19, at the top and bottom thereof respectively, inclosing said panel. Suitable lettering, or words, referring either to the holder itself, or to the articles supported thereby, may be molded, cast, or otherwise placed upon, or aflixed to, this panel.
In the upper portion of the section 11 I form seats or openings 21 adapted to receive the standards 22 of the flags 23, or other articles to be sup orted by the holder, and in order to provide a more secure and efficient support for the same I form bosses or other reinforcements 2 1 around said seats 21.
My holder thus constructed with its weighted lower section will usually maintain its normal operative position, and even if tilted, accidentally or otherwise, will re turn thereto. Moreover the central panel provides a desirable means for displaying advertisements or other suitable matter, while the upper section with its reinforced seats acts as a reliable support for one or more articles.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A holder for flags and other articles comprising a hollow globular body formed in upper and lower hemispherical sections, the wall of the crown portion of the upper section being thickened, said crown portlon having a series of spaced openings therethrough, said openings extending in alinement with the axis of the globular body, and means for holding said body in an upright position.
2. A holder for flags and other articles comprising a hollow globular body formed in upper and lower hemispherical sections, the wall of the crown portion of the upper section being thickened, said crown portion having a series of spaced openings therethrough, said openings extending in aline- Patented Sept.:=2, 1919.--
ment With the axis of the globular body; a Weight in the bottom of said lower hemispherical section, and a; socket formed in the bottom of said lower section. r
3. A holder for flags and the like comprising a hollow globular body formed in upper and lower hemispherical sections, the crown portion of the upper section having a Copies of this patent may be obtained for series of spaced openings therein, said open ings extending in alinement With the axis of the globular body, andmeans for holding said'body in an upright position.
Iii testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, this 13th day of May 1918.
. FRITZ O. VON T OBEL.
