CONTAINER Filed Jan. 13, 1928 Patented Nov. 5, 1929 UNITEDST'ArE-s PATENT OFFICE g JAMES PAULL ANDy ALBERT A. MILLER, OF WELLSBURG, yWEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNORS TO THE EAGLE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF WELLSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA, A
y CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA CONTAINER Application filed January 13, 1928. Serial No. 246,512.
This invention is a container for convcny iently merchandizingy small articles, such as candy or the like, although not specifically limited to such use. l
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a sanitary container of simple construction, provided ywith a removable base so that it may be conveniently supported for display purposes. A further object is to provide a device of the character mentioned equipped with a removable closure, provided with means by which the receptacle ,may be suspended if desired. A further object is to provide a receptacle ofthe character mentioned constructed of glass or other transparent material, and provided with a basev and top constructed of non-corrosive metal,
so that plating or painting thereof is rendered unnecessary.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Figure 3 is a detail view illustrating the glass container.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a container constructed of glass or similar f from a base 18, said sleeve being provided with a threaded portion 19 complemental to the thread on said cylindrical extension. It will be observed that the upper portion 2O of the sleeve 17 is flared outwardly and the extremity thereof is turned or beaded inwardly as indicated at 21, to avoid the presentation produce a tight frictional engagement of the' parts.
The boss 141 is engaged by a 23, prol vided with a screw threaded portion 24C, comn plemental to the threads of said boss. Said cap is provided with ya cylindrical portion which extends well above the end of the container, and is provided with openings vinto which are extended the bent ends 25ct' a bail 26by which the entire assembly may bek suspended while the base yand cap are engaged with the body. It is preferred to give the container the characteristics of a toy, and
with this in view,y it is designed to resemble a lantern, and for this purpose the cap is provided with a concavo convex flange 27, which overhangs the upper portion kof the body 10. Said body 10 is also provided with longitudinal ribs 28, and an annular rib 29 intersecting the first mentioned ribs, so as to simulate the appearance of the bars of a well known type of lantern. n y
In practice, small candies or similar articles are introduced into the container 10 through the mouth thereof, and the cap screwed downy so as to close said mouth; The threads 19 of the depending cylindrical portion of the body are engaged withy the threaded portion of the base 18 until the flared portion 20 engages the bulge 22, and the device is now ready either to be displayed by resting upon said base, or by being suspended from a suitable support by the bail 26. `In order to prevent deterioration of the metal parts and to preserve the bright and contrasting appearance thereof, it is desirable to construct them of a suitable noncorrosive metal.A Any desired metal of this type will serve this purpose, but it is preferred to conreadily apparent to those skilled in the art to correspondingly which it belongs. For instance, it will be particularly noted that a very attractive container of simple form is provided, so constructed that it may be conveniently supported for display purposes, and being constructed of glass and non-corrosive metal the parts always remain bright and attractive. Another important advantage is that sharp metal edges are avoided and a firm frictional engagement of the parts is provided.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described an operative manner of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, or all of the forms oic its use, what is claimed is l. A container oft-he character described comprising a bulged container body of transparent material provided with a depending cylindrical extension at its lower end and an open mouth at its upper end, a base provided with a flared sleeve to receive said cylindrical extension so as to support the containen, said container having a portion positioned to engage said sleeve so as to spring the engaged portion thereof outwardly to produce a tight frictional engagement of the parts and a removable cap engaging the upper end of said container so as to close said mouth.
2. A cont-ainer of the character described comprising a container body provided with Y a cylindrical extension at its lower end and an opening at its other end, said body being enlarged contiguously to said cylindrical extension so as to provide a bulged shoulder` a base having a sleeve to receive said cylindrical extension, the upper portion of said sleeve being iared so as to contact with said shoulder while the parts are engaged, said shoulder being shaped to force the flared portion of said sleeve outwardly so as to produce a tight frictional engagement of the parts, the edge of said iiared portion being turned over, and a removable cap for the upper end of said container body. Y
, 3. A container of the character described comprising a container body of glass, a base of non-corrosive metal removably engaging the lower portion of said container, said base and said container having complemental means for springing a portion of the base outwardly so as to produce a tight rictional en gagement of the parts, and a cap also constructed of non-.corrosive metal removably engaging the upper end of said container.
4. A container of the character described comprising a container body of glass having a lower bulged portion and a contiguous cylindrical extension, said container being open at its upper end, said extension being provided with a screw thread, a base formed with a sleeve to receive said extension and a supporting Hange at the lower end of said sleeve, and having a screw thread contiguous to said fiange and complement-al to the first mentioned screw thread, said sleeve extending above. the plane of said thread into engagement with said bulged portion, so that said sleeve will be sprung outwardly to produce a tight frictional engagement of the parts, a cap removably engaging the upper end of saidbody, and a wire bail engaging said cap, said base and said cap being constructed of non-corrosive metal.
5. A container of the character described comprising a glass body provided with a lower extension and an opening in its top, said opening being surrounded by a threaded boss, a base provided with a cylindrical portion removably engaging said extension so as to support said body, said base and said container having complemental engaging portions so that the sleeve will be sprung outwardly to produce a tight frictional engagement of the parts, a cylindrical cap provided .with a threaded portion complemental to said threaded boss, and a flange below the plane of said thread, and a wire bail engaging said cap so that the device may be suspended, said cap and base being constructed of non-corrosive metal.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
