Description

J. @..STODDARD- Shoe-Holder.
Patented Jan. 27, 1880.
NAPEYERS. PHOTO-UTHOGRAFHER. wASHxNGTDN. DV c.
`UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA C. STODDA'RD, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,822, dated January 27, 1880.
Application filed August 13, 1879.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, J osHUA C. STODDARD, of Springteld,in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts,`have invented anew and Improved Shoe-Holder or Form for Impart- 4ing Shape and Symmetry to Boots and Shoes in Show-Gases, 85e.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a sectional view.
My invention has for its object to provide a light, strong, and' cheap shoe-holder or form for imparting shape and symmetry to boots and shoes displayed in show windows and cases, and also one that can be used to darn stockings upon.
To this end it consists of a new article of manufacture, to wit: a shoe-holder or form constr ucted of a hollow shell of paper or other an alogous material molded or otherwise formed into proper shape, substantially as hereinafter described.
The material which I preferably employ in the construction of my improved form is paper. This is molded or otherwise manipulated in a manner well known to those skilled in the art so as to produce ahollow shell, such as shown in the drawings, of the size and-proportions of an ordinary wooden last, though very much lighter in weight.
The exterior of the shell is preferably painted and finished so as to present a neat and ornamental appearance and a hard surface not easily penetrated.
Instead of paper vulcanized ber, hard rubber, or other analogous materials might be employed. i
For filling out and imparting shape and symmetry to boots and shoes displayed for exhibition in show-cases and elsewhere, my improved forms answer far better than the cotton, rags, or loose paper filling at present employed for the purpose.
The lightness of the shells and their correspondence with the shape of the foot also render them very convenient to darn stockings upon. I
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, the shoe- -holder or form herein described, consisting of a hollow shell of paper or other analogous material molded or otherwise formed into the proper shape, for the purpose specified.
