WILLIAM H. GURRIER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lhl ORGAN-STOP KNOBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 188.860, dated March 27, 1877 application filed January 11, 1877.
To all whom it may cancer-n:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. OURRIER, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in the Construction of Knobs for Organ-Stops, which invention is described in the following. specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a knob embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same. Fig. 3 shows the ring separate.
The same letters indicate the same parts in each.
My invention relates to that class of knobs in which tablets or plates are inserted, on which the letters or numbers are placed to indicate the nature of the stop. It is designed to furnish a ready and convenient means for securing the tablet in the knob, and to allow of its adjustment or removal, if necessary, at
any time without removing the knob.
In the usual mode of constructing such knobs heretofore, the face or top of the knob has been recessed with a plain straight-sided cavity, to receive the tablet, and some ce mentor glue put on the back of the tablet when put in to hold it-there. In practice this is not found to be reliable, and the tablets not unfrequently fall out, and in setting the knobs great care was necessary to set the marks ac. curately, without inclination either way.
These objections are fully overcome by my invention, wherein the cavity for the tablet is made deep enough, and is enlarged a little in front, so as to form a lip or chine, as shown at D, Fig. 2. After laying in the tablet B I put a holding-ring, G, or other equivalent device to spring out within the chine, and securely hold the tablet. By loosening the ring the tablet can be easily adjusted, repaired, or removed, if broken.
The ring 0 may be plain or ornamental, or of twisted or corrugated wire; or, instead of a metal ring, one of colored wax, leather, or other substance may be inserted between the chine D and tablet B, and serve the same purpose.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The stop-knob A, provided with a recess having a chine, D, the tablet B, and the elastic or other holding-ring O, substantially as and for the purposes described.
WILLIAM H. OURRIER.
