Description

@sind 5mm @met @Willa I. N. PATTEN AND D. G. MARDEN, Oll MEMPHIS, TENESSEE.
Letters Patent N o. 99,228, dated Janna/ry 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN' HAY AN D COTTON-PRESSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
.To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that' we, I. N. PATTEN and D. G. MAR- DEN, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby, and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Presses; and we do hereby declare that. the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable othersskilled in the alt to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. -This invention relates to new and useful improvements in presses for hay, cotton, and other like substances, and consists ofimprovements in the means for working and holding the follower, the said means consisting of clamping or holdfast-blocks workingon rods standing parallel with the line of movement of the follower, and eccentric rollers, worked by handlevers, so arranged that one set of the clamping or holdfast-blocks, connected to the follower, will engage the rods, and hold the follower, while the other set, connected to the eccentric rollers, is adjusted along the rods for a new hold.
The rollers are connected by links to the follower, in a way to force it down as the rollers are turned, all as hereinafter specified.
Figure 1 is aside elevation, part-ly sectioned, Vand Figure 2 is a partial end elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the follower, working up and down between the posts '13.
C are clamping or holdfast-blocks, working up and down on the rods D. They have large holes, through which therods pass, by which, when the blocks are adjusted on the rods, as represented in fig. 1, and force is applied to the under sides of the projecting ends C', they will clamp against the rods, so as to hold, at any point along the said rods.
The ends C of these blocks project into recesses in the ends of the follower, so that the upward resistance of the substance being pressed, forces the ends C upward into the said clamping-positions.
E represents another similar pair of clam ping-blocks on the rods D, which are used to hold the eccentric-v rollers F, which they do by taking the shafts F' thereof into the grooves in the inner projecting ends E.
These rollers have grooved pulleys G, by which they are suspended in links H from trunnions I onthe followers.`
In operation, the rollers are turned so that the shafts F are at the lowest point they can occupy, when the rollers are suspended in the links H. r1he blocks E are then adjusted as far down on the rods as possible, with their grooves resting on the shafts.
The rollers are then turned by wrenches L, or other levers applied to them, s'o as to bring the shafts atrthe highest position relatively to the other parts. This will force the pulleys G downward, thereby drawing the links and the follower down a distance equal to .the throw of the eccentric-rollers.
rIhe clamping-blocks O, following down the rods,
will th'en take hold and hold the follower, till the roller Patent- 2. The arrangement of eccentric-pulleys G, and self-I adjusting holdfast-blocks C E, as and for the purpose specied.
I. N. PATTEN.
D. G. MARDEN.
