Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
MARSHALL TVALLACE, OF LITTLE ROOK, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY AND COTTON PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,893, dated August 30, 1870.
' To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL YVALLACE, of Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Presses; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speeit` cation.
This invention rel-.ttes to improvements iu presses for hay and cotton and consists in the combination, with the ratchet-toothed stem of a follower, of pivoted levers, springpawls, hinged plates, levers, and springs, as hereinafter shown and described.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved press, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The case A is arranged on suitable supports B, so that the follower O will work from the bottom upward. The stem l) of the follower is provided with ratchet-teeth ou two opposite sides, and the levers E, provided with springactuated sliding pawls F, are employed for raising it. Below the levers E are other spring-actuated sliding pawls, G, for holdin g it after being raised by the levers E.
To increase the leverage for pressing with great force I have applied the eccentric-levers H to the long arms ofthe levers E, as shown, for forcing them down, and I use the springs I under them for raising them up.
The eounterbalance-weights K are applied to the stem D by means of cords working over pulleys L, to assist in raising the follower; also to regulate the descent of the follower when the pawls are disconnected from the stem D for the purpose. This is done by sliding the pawls back against their springs, and securin g them by the hinged plates O, which are turned over against the studs P, provided on the said pawls for the purpose. This arrangement makes a very simple and eicient press, which may be worked easily by one or two persons.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination ofthe standard D and pivoted levers E, provided with slidingpawls F,
studs P, and hinged plates o, and operated by levers H and springs I, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
MARSHALL IVA LLA O E.
