Description
anna eine aient ,'(fltiljle Letters Patent No. 99,244, dated January 25, 1870.
IMPRO'VENIENT LIITING-JACKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, BENJAMIN ScHoPF and CHRIS- 'HAN SoHoPF, of Pittsburg, in the county of Carroll, and State of Indiana, rhave invented a new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Jacks and do herebydeclare the following desorption, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings, hereinafter referred to forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein we have set forth the nature and principles of our said improvement, byv which our invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts asn-'e claim and desire to secure by- Letters Patent.
Our invention relates to that class of mechanical devices termed liftng-jacks,and consists of a fulcrumstandard, lifting-beam, and operating-lever, connected together by metallic straps or links, in such a manner as to produce a mechanism of great power, when in operation, and which maybe folded up compactly when not in use.
In the accompanying plate 4of drawings, which illustrate our invention, and form apar-tof the specification thereof', and in which corresponding parts are indicated by similar letters- Figure 1 is a view of the and Figure 2 represents the said jack folded together. The construction and operation of our invention are as follows, to wit:
jack, set ready for lifting,
A represents the' lifting-beam, provided with the cheeks a a for the load to be raised to rest on, and the shoulder a to receive the end of the operating-lever.
B is the fulcrum-standard, rounded at its upper end to t within the shoulder c.
C is the operating-lever, provided with a shoulder, c,-indicated in the figure by dotted lines.
The said operating-lever and fulcrurn-standard are connected together, by means of the obtuse-angled cheeks E and bolts c, in such a manner that the said fulornm-standard is free to describe an arc about the bolt by means of which it is secured to the said ob= tosc-angled cheeks.
Thesaid lever and lifting-,beam are connected to-` getlger by means of the cheeks or links F, and the bolts f, in snch a manner that they, to wit, the said vlever and lifting-beam, may be revolved about the said bolts as centres. v i
When in operation, the jack is placed in position,
as shown in iig. 1, with the shoulder a under the object to be raised. The rounded end of the lever O is then inserted beneath the' shoulder a', and force applied tl1ereto.
'lhe fulcrum-standard B forms a firm support for the said lever, the end thereof working within the shoulder c of the same. v
When it is desirable to pack or fold the jack for the purpose of transportation, or other reason, it is only necessary to revolve the operating-lever O toward the lifting-beam A. The en d of the said lever then passes clear of the shoulder, a', and the parts of the machine assume the position indicated by tig. 2.
Having described the nature, construction, and operation of our invention, we will designatewhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
in the following clause: l
The lifting-beam A, fulcrum-standard'B, operatin glever O, cheek F, and angular cheek E, when arranged to operate as described.
BENJAMIN SGHOPF. CHRISTIAN SOHOPF.
