height of plow handles relative to the beam or relative to the furrow.
A further object of the invention is to provide plow handles pivoted to the beam and with a slot formed longitudinally of the beam, and a slot formed longitudinally of the handle which registers with the slot of thebeam and permits the angular adjustment of the handles relative to the beam.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved plate adapted to fit upon the plow handles and to accommodate tension bolts.
IVith these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, aswill be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of one embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view with one of the handles removed the embodiment being the same as that shown at Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the embodiment as shown at and taken along arrow 33 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the plate used upon the handles of the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 3. Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of a slightly different embodiment of the invention. Fig. 6 is a view with one of the handles removed showing the bolts in section of the embodiment shown at Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the embodiment shown at and taken along arrows 77 of Figs. 5 and 6. Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the plate employed upon the embodiment shown at Figs. 5 to 7.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The present invention is used in connection with a plow beam 10 of substantially the usual and ordinary construction to which the handles 11 or 11 are pivoted as at 12 or 12. In the former embodiment, that shown at Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the pivoting of the handles is adjacent the lower edge of the beam, while in the latter embodiment,
that shown at Figs. 5 to'7, the handles are pivoted adjacent the middle of the beam.
In the embodiment shown at Figs. 1 to 3 a slot 13 is formed longitudinally of the beam, substantially in the middle of the beam vertically, and a little to the rear of the pivot 12, while in the embodiment shown at Figs. 5 to 7, the slot 13 is formed adj acent the lower side of the beam and a little in front of the pivot 12.
In either embodiment the handles 11 or 11 are provided with slots 14 and 14 extending longitudinally of the handles and consequently disposed at an angle to the slot of the beam and through which are inserted bolts 15 and 15, respectively, which serve to clamp the handles upon the sides of the beam. The handles are also provided with slots 16 and 16 respectively so related to the pivot and beam that a bolt 17 or 17 inserted through such slots 16 and 16 will rest upon the upper edge of the beam and when the nut upon such bolt is screwed up the handles will clamp the beam at the upper edge.
Upon the sides of the handles 11 and 11 are secured plates shown as a whole at 18 and 18 the plate 18 having slots 19 and 20 proportioned and positioned to register, respectively, with the slots 16 and 1 1 and a pivot opening 21 positioned to register with the pivot of the handles and permit the passage of the bolt 12 therethrough. The plate 18 is similarly provided with slots 19 and 20 to receive the bolts 16 and 15 and a pivot opening 21 positioned to receive the pivot bolt 12. In both instances the plates are provided with ears 22 positioned and proportioned to engage upon the opposite edges of the handles 11 and 11 to position the plate relative thereto.
It will thus be seen that with all of the several bolts clamped the handles 11 or 11 are clamped rigidly in position upon the beam 10 but that when it is desirable to adjust the handles angularly relative to such beam the bolts being loosened permits the angular adjustment of the handles. The movement of the handles upon the pivots l2 and 12 will cause the bolts 15 and 15 to move longitudinally within both of the slots 13 and 14 or 13' and 14: and will also permit the movement of the bolts 17 and 17 within the slots 16 and 16' to at all times bear upon the upper surfaces of the beam.
The forming of the slots 13 and 14 disposed at an angle to each other materially increases the frictional engagement of the handles with the beams caused by tightening the bolts 15 as it is apparent that if the slots registered throughout much less frictional efiicien'cy would be provided by clamping the bolts.
l/Vhat I claim is The combination with a plow beam having a pivot hole and a straight longitudinal slot formed therein, of plow handles positioned on opposite sides of the plow beam, each provided with a pivot hole registering with the pivot hole of the plow beam, and two straight longitudinal slots, one of which is adapted to cross and register in partvwith the slot in the plow beam the other positioned above the plow beam, and fastening bolts passed through the pivot holes and each of the slots, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
