@ZZW f pa M UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE,
LUPPE LUPPEN, OF IEKIN, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOVEL-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. IOS,272, dated October 11, 1870.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, LUPPE LUPPEN, of Pekin, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Shovel-Flows, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shovel and a portion of the beam or standard to which it is attached, and also of my improved clamp for clamping such shovel to the beam or standard. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, showing the construction of the clamp.
Corresponding letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to shovel-plows or cultivators; and it consists in an improved clamp for attaching the shovel to the beam 01' standard which carries it, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
In attaching shovels to iron plow-beams or to iron standards, great difficulty has heretofore been experienced from such shovels becoming loosened after a short time, in consequence of the fact that no adequate means have been provided for tighten ing the same to such beam or standard.
My obj eet in this improvement is to provide a remedy for the abovereferred-to difficulty.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A in the drawings refers to a beam of a shovel-plow, a portion thereof being shown, or it may refer to an iron standard attached to a beam of wood.
B refers to a shovel, which may be of any desired form of construction, and of any material usually employed for such purposes.
0 refers to the clamp, which is designed to secure the shovel upon the beam or standard, and which forms the subject-matter of the present invention. The construction of this clamp is as follows: Two brackets are formed, each having upon its inner or upper ends flanges projecting outward, bywhieh they are secured to the shovel by riveting or bolting.
| These brackets extend downward or outward a distance equal to the width of the beam or standard to which the shovel is attached, and for a farther distance sufficient to enable the parts which project beyond such beam or standard to receive through them laterally a bolt, which shall, when the clamp is made to embrace the beam or standard, cause it to be pressed firmly againstthe surface of such beam or standard, and thus prevent the shovel from moving thereon. The recess or aperture through this clamp for the reception of the beam or standard is formed by cutting away portions of the inner surfaces of each section of the clamp equal to about one-half of the thickness of the beam or standard, so that itmay be passed through and between such sec tions, in doing which they will be slightly pressed apart, so that as they are slipped upon the beam or standard, and the bolt is placed in their outer portions, and the nut screwed thereon, they will grasp and hold firmly upon the same, and thus be prevented from moving up and down thereon.
It will be observed that the inner surfaces of the sections of this clamp are parallel with the sides of the beam or standard, and consequent-ly theshovel can notturn upon such beam, but will always be retained in the position in which it is first placed, except that it may be moved vertically upon such beam or standard.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The clamp herein described for attaching shovels to the standard of a plow, composed of two brackets secured to the back of the shovel, and having recesses in their opposing faces for the reception of the standard, which is clamped between them by means of a bolt and nut, snbstantiallyinthe manner set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LUPPE LUPPEN.
