Description

A. L. COBB.
CLAMP.
APPLICATION IILED MAY 1, 1911.
Patented Oct. 3, 1911.
entor Attorneys Witnesss UNITED srarns ra rnur orrion ALFRED L. COBB, OF ESTES PARK, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF TWENTY-FOUR AND ONE- I-IALF ONE-HUNDREDTHS T HOMER E. JAMES AND TWENTY-FOUR AND ONE-HALF ONE-HUNDBEDTHS TO HOV/A313 P. JAMES, BOTH OF ESTES PARK, COLORADO.
CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, ALFRED L. Conn, a citizen of the United States, residing at "Estes Park, in the county of Larimer and and claimed.
- is a side elevation of the clamp.
The object of the invention is to provide an extension clamp consisting of members arranged to telescope with relation to each other one of the members being formed of strips of channel iron and provided at one end with a post through which is threaded a thrust screw. The other member is provided upon its inner side with strips adapted to slide in the channels of the first mentioned member and the last mention-ed member is provided with an adjustable bail stop and a pivoted bail which is adapted to engage in notches provided at the upper edge of the first mentioned member.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same cut on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same cut on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the same cut on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the tail stock forming a part of the clamp.
The clamp includes an extensible bar made up of members 1 and 2 the member 1 being adapted to slide telescopically within the member 2. The member 1 is made up of one or more strips of metal each provided in its outer side with a longitudinally disposed channel 3. The intermediate portions of the said strips 1 fit one against the other and are secured by means of rivets 4: passed transversely through the said portions so that the ends of the rivets are at the bottoms of the channels 3 provided in the said strips. A post 5 is fitted over the strips constituting the member 1 at one end thereof and a thrust screw 6 is threaded through the post and is provided at one end with a' channeled block 7 and at its other end Wi h an operat- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing handle pin 8. The strips which constitute the member 1 are provided at their upper edges with notches 9 which are inclined downwardly and away from the post 5.
As hereinbefore stated the member 2 slidably receives the member 1 and the said member 2 is provided upon the inner surfaces of its side portions with strips 10 which are snugly received in the channels 3 of the member 1. A bail 11 is pivotally attached at its ends with the side portions of the member 2 and the intermediate portion of the said bail is adapted to be received 1by the notches 9 provided upon the mem- A tail stock 12 is provided with a rectangular opening 13 which slidably receives the member 2 and the member 2 is provided at its upper portion with notches 14:. The tail stock 12 is provided with a tongue 15 which is adapted to enter the notches 1A and when so positioned the lower portion of the tail stock 12 will bear against the lower side of the member 2 and thus the said stock will be locked in position upon the member 2 as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The lower portion of the tail stock 12 is inclined or disposed toward the post 5 and consequently any strain or pressure applied to that portion of the said tail stock which is above the member 2 will have a tendency to more firmly bind the said tail stock in a fixed position upon the member 2.
In operation the members 1 and 2 of the clamp are adjusted longitudinally with relation to each other to effect major adjustment and then the intermediate portion of the bail 11 is permitted to fall in one of the slots 9. This will hold the said members with relation to each other. The tail stock 12 will then be adjusted along the member 2 to effect minor adjustment and the work is inserted between the journaled pin 7 and the upper portion of the tail stock 12 and the screw 6 is tightened whereby the work is securely held between the said block 7 and tail stock 12. By this arrangement it will be seen that a durable, strong and at the same time, light clamp structure is effected and that the parts may be easily and quickly adj usted to meet existing conditions.
By providing stop blocks 16 in the ends of the channel 3, the strips 10 will move thereagainst and thus prevent the member 2 from being withdrawn from the member 1,
By referring to Fig. 1 it will be apparent that bail 11 is held positively in engagement with the member 1 by the engaged work, it thus being impossible for the bail to pull out of the notch as long as the clamp is in use.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A clamp including an extensible bar consisting of telescopically connected members, registering notches extending transversely within the work engaging edges of said members, a bail pivotally connected to the outer member and shiftable into any one of the notches within the inner member, a post upstanding from one end of the inner memher, a clamping element carried thereby, a tail stock slidably and tiltably mounted upon and extending around the outer member of the bar, and a tongue integral with said stock and shiftable into any one of the notches in the outer member of the bar, said bail being held in engagement with the notched inner member by the engaged work.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have heretofore aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
