JOSEPH SCHACK, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ARTIFICIAL DECORATION.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1911.
Application filed November 7, 1910. Serial No. 590,981.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Sermon, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Artificial Decorations, of which the following is a complete specification. g The main objects of this invention are to provide improved means for artificial decorations which is adapted for use wherever artificial decorations are desired; to provide an artificial decoration which is pleasing to the eye and capable of being formed into a great number of designs; to provide an artificial decoration of cheap, simple and durable construction, and of comparatively light weight; andr to provide an artificial decoration having a near resemblance to a mass or bed of flower petals, grass blades, leaves or similar articles.
A specific construction embodied in said invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: l
Figure l is a perspective View of a preferred form of the artificial decoration. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same. F ig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation ot' one of the laminated strips. Fig. 4 is a View showing a slightly modified form of the construction.
In the construction shown,I the backing 1 comprises a sheet of suitable `material having sufficient strength, and preferably of an open or meshed construction, such as gauze or tarletan. Secured to one side of said backing, by pasting or in any other desired manner1 are a plurality of laminated strips 2 of thln paper or other suitable material. Each of said strips 2 comprises a base portion 3 and a plurality of tongues or petals 4. The base portion extends longitudinally of the strip and is adapted 4to be pasted to the backing l and to overlap the base portion of the next adjacent strip on one side thereof. The remaining portion of the strip is turned upwardly from, and at approximately a right angle to, the backing and is cut transversely to provide the tongues 4, the outer ends 5 of which are preferably curled in the same direction and' lcrimped to simulate petals of flowers, or any other desired objects, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. Said strips are so arranged that the tongues stand out from the backing and overlap those of adjacent strips.
If preferred the tongues 4 may be separate and distinct from each other, and secured directly to the backing, as shown in Fig. 4, but the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, is much easier to assemble and affords a more artistic appearance.
The tongues may be of any desired color and may be curled or crimped in many different ways to vary the general appearance and simulate various kinds of petals, grasses, leaves and other objects.
The completed sheet may be eut into strips and figures of various designs to suit the Y purpose for which they are to be employed as decorations.
lVhile I have shown and described but one specific embodiment of my invention it will be understood that various details of the construction shown may be varied or omitted without departing from the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. An artificial decoration comprising a fiexible backing of sheet form and a plurality of paper strips secured thereto each of said strips comprising a base portion which overlaps the base portion of an adjacent strip, and an outstanding portion carrying a plurality of curled tongues.
2. An artificial decoration comprising a flexible backing of sheet form and a plurality of paper strips secured thereto each of said strips comprising a base portion which overlaps the base portion of an adjacent strip, and an outstanding portion carrying a plurality of curled tongues, the edges of said tongues being corrugated.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH SCHACK. Witnesses:
Ro'r. KLoTz, GUSTAVE WVINTER.
