To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAURICE VEIT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Artificial Feather, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to artificial ornaments, and its object is to provide a new and improved artificial feather for forming plumes, aigrets and other ornaments, such as are used for hat and dress trimmings, millinery ornaments, hair ornaments and the like, the artificial feather being formed in a very simple manner, from a blank having a back, and overlapping sheets secured thereon, and from which blank are cut thin strips, each having a stem and filaments extending therefrom.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of an aigret formed of artificial feathers; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the strips are cut; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the supporting or reinforcing backbone and the filaments partly secured thereon; and Fig. 5 is a cross section of the same on the line 55 of Fig. 4:.

On a back A, of sheet form and of celluloid or other suitable material, are secured, at one end B, a series of overlapping narrow sheets B, of celluloid or a similar material, thus forming a blank from which thin strips G are cut, as indicated in Fig. 2, each strip having a stem C and filaments G extending therefrom, as plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. One or more such strips C are glued or otherwise secured to a reinforcing backbone D, of covered wire or other suitable material, each strip C being fastened with its stem C lengthwise of the backbone D, so that the filaments G extend gracefully from the backbone, thereby producing a single feather, which can be bunched, as indicated in Fig. l, to form an aigret, plume or other similar ornament.

As shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, I prefer to use two strips 0 on a single reinforcing backbone D, and secure the stems O one alongside the other, so that the filaments C of the said strips C extend in opposite directions, and thus give fullness to the feather produced.

Although I prefer to use two strips on a single backbone D, it is evident that only one or more of such strips may be used, and by making the back A of sufficient thickness, it is possible to even dispense with the reinforcing backbone D and to use the strips 0 as such for forming the desired ornament. It is further understood that by providing the back A with more or less sheets B, more or less filaments C are formed on each strip. It will also be noticed that the sheets B may be made in various colors so as to provide a feather of any desired hue.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. As a new article of manufacture, an artificial feather or like article, comprising a stem and a plurality of filaments, each having an end secured to the stem, the ends being in overlapping relation.

2. As a new article of manufacture, an artificial feather or like article, comprising a stem and a plurality of filaments projecting from the same side of the stem, each filament having one end secured to the stem, the ends being in overlapping relation.

3. As a new article of manufacture an artificial feather or like article, consisting of a flexible backbone, and a flexible strip secured to the backbone and provided with a plurality of filaments all projecting from the same side of the stem, the filaments be ing in overlapping relation.

4. A blank for forming artificial feathers or like articles, comprising a back of sheet form, and thin flexible narrow sheets overlapping each other and each secured along the length of one edge to the said back, to permit of cutting strips from the said blank so that each strip will have a stem and filaments secured at one end to the stem.
