LIZABETI-I A. DIFFENBAUGH, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS.
UNDERGARMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIZABETH A. DIFFEN- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at F reeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to an improvement in undergarments, but more particularly to drawers.
The principal object of my invention comprehends the production of an article of the above character so constructed that it will be impossible for the legs of the drawers to work up and wrinkle about the limbs of the wearer, but will at all times remain in proper position.
A further object of my invention resides in producing an article of this kind which is extremely simple, and will cost Very little more to manufacture than the present form of drawers.
In the drawings which illustrate my invention in its preferred form and in which like reference letters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several viewsFigure 1 is a rear elevation of a pair of drawers provided with my invention, and showing the preferred manner of forming the heel portion of the drawer legs. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the lower portion of one of the drawers legs, illustrating the first fold, after cutting, and Fig. 4 is a similar View illustrating the second and finishing fold.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters of reference indicated thereon, A denotes a pair of drawers of the usual construction with the exception that the lower ends of the legs B thereof, are partially closed as at C, instead of being entirely open as heretofore.
As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the closed or heel portions 0 extend from the rear side of the legs to about the center thereof, and are curved as at D to correspond to the curvature of the heels of the wearer. The heel portions C, as shown in the drawings,

are preferably formed by cutting the rear of the drawer legs upwardly a short distance after they have been formed in the usual manner, and turning back triangular flaps and stitching the outer edges of said flaps upon the outer surfaces of the legs, and then drawing the lower ends of the legs inwardly and stitching the inner edges of said flaps together as well as the lower edges of the legs for a short distance, as at F, forming heel pockets.
The front of the drawer legs are preferably curved outwardly, as indicated at G, so as to cause them to fit snugly about the insteps of the wearer.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide an extremely simple and inexpensive improvement in drawers which will effectually serve to hold the drawer legs down and in proper position at all times, and, as in the ease of children, permit them to draw on their stockings without the aid of an older person.
lVhile I have shown my invention in its preferred form, it will be understood that various other ways of forming the heel portions may be employed Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and no limitation is implied by reason of the particular structure shown.
I claim- An undergarmcnt of the kind described, having the lower portions of its legs slitted upwardly at the rear, and triangular portions turned back at each side of the slit and stitched at their outer edges to the legs, the inner edges of said triangular portions and portions of the lower edges of the legs immediately adjacent thereto, being stitched together, whereby to draw the rear lower portions of the legs inwardly and form heel pockets.
In testimony whereof I a'fiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
LIZABETH A. DIFFENBAUGH.
