EDMOND D. NUGENT, OF FORT NECESSITY, LOUISIANA.
HOE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1911.
Application filed December 7, 1910. Serial N 0. 596,090.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND D. NUGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Necessity, in the parishpf Franklin and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoe-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an im roved hoe clamp or device whereby the bla e of a hoe may be clamped and held very securely while having its under face ground upon an ordinary grindstone.
Where hoes are extensively used for chopping and cultivating purposes the importance of having the edge of the blade kept sharp and in perfect condition is universally admitted. It is also well known that it is a diflicult matter to properly grind the blade of a hoe because the hoe handle is disposed midway between the ends of the blade, and difficulty is thus experienced in holding all portions of the edge of the blade to the grindstone with the same degree of pressure, thus causing the blade to be nicked and unevenly ground.
The present invention has for its object to provide a clamp whereby a hoe blade may be engaged to enable it to be held securely and manipulated efliciently while being ground.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a hoe to which the improved clamp has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken longitudinally through the clamp and the hoe blade.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved clamping device is formed of a strip 1 of steel or other suitable resilient metal, one end of which is upturned and fitted with a handle 2, the latter being positioned approximately at right angles to the body of the strip. The opposite end of the latter is bent to form a loop 3 and an arm 4, the latter being doubled upon the body of the strip, as shown. The latter is formed with a transverse groove or depression 5. A set screw 6, which extends through and bears against the arm 4 near the end of the latter, is threaded into the body of the strip 1, thus enabling the arm 4 to be tightened upon said body.
In practice, the set screw 6 having been loosened, the hoe blade is inserted between the strip 1 and the arm 4, the rib 7 of the hoe blade being accommodated in the groove or recess 5, after which the set screw is tightened to cause the clamp to securely engage the hoe blade. The operator may now grasp the hoe handle 8 and the clamp handle 2, being thus enabled to use both hands efiectively in manipulating. the hoe when applied to a grindstone.
It is obvious that the improved clamp may be applied or removed in a moments time. The rib 7 which exists upon practically every hoe blade is formed by an extension of the handle socket, and the presence of said rib, which also constitutes a reinforcement accounts for the formation of the groove or recess 5 upon the clamp strip 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A hoe clamp consisting of a resilient strip having at one end an arm bent upon the body of the strip and at the other end an upstanding handle, and means for connecting the free end of the arm with the body of the strip.
2. A hoe clamp consist-ing of a resilient strip having a clamping arm connected therewith and provided with a recess intermediate its ends, said strip being provided at one end with an upstanding handle, and means for connecting the free end of the arm with the body of the strip.
8. A hoe clamp consisting of a resilient strip bent to form a terminal loop and an arm ezitending from said 100p toward the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature body of the strip, the latter being provided in presence of two witnesses. at its opposite end with an upstanding handle and intermediate its ends with a EDMOND NUGENT' groove 01' recess, and means for connecting WVitnesses:
the free end of the arm and forcing it in the W. B. CUNY,
direction of the body of the strip. N. A. WIGGERS.
