HOD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May -2, 1911.
Application filed May 20, 1910. Serial No. 562,424.'v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, `THOMAS B. WALSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention` relates to' improvements..l in hods and has for'its object the production of an improved hod which shall be of simple construction and eicient in operation.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter de-L scribed and claimed.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which, Figure 1 is a side View of a hod embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a top plan View of the same, Fig. 3, an end view of the same, F ig. 4, an enlarged section Lon line :z2- of Fig. 1, Fig. 5, an enlarged section on line y-y of Fi'g. 1,-and Fig. 6, an enlarged section on line e-z of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as villustrated in the drawings' comprises a body member formedv of two substantially shaped sheet metal members 1 and 2 having over-lapping end portions 3 and et se- `cured together by means of bolts 5 pass- .ing therethrough. Additional bolt holes 6 are `provided in members 3 and iy for the purpose of adjusting the width of said body member. Said body member is carried by supporting arms and 8 which consist. of
iron pipes made up in U form to embrace said body member on the ends and bottom and pivoted at 9 and 10 at either end to body members 1 and 2, as shown. At each end supporting arms 7 and 8 are provided with outwardly turned handle portions 11 and 12 which furnish a convenient grip for carrying the hod, which is designed to be carried by two men walking between handles 11 and 12. The bottom of the hod is closed by an adf -justable arm 13 hinged at 14 to member 8 and resting upon the lower portion of member 7 when said bottom is in closed position, as shown. Supporting arms 7 and 8 are connected by means of adjustable upwardly breaking self-locking braces 15 attached to said supporting arms above their pivotal point and serving-to lock said arms 1n closed position. Adjustable reinforcing and .stiil'ening arms 16 'are` secured'across ltheir lower portions and releases bottom 13 to discharge the contents of said hod. The width of the hod may be readily increased or diminished by means of bolts 5 andv bolt holes 6, arms15 and 16 being. adjustable'to permit of this. f
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation or, modilication without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A. device of the class described comprising a body; two supporting arms for said body, each of said arms being shaped to embrace said body and pivoted to either end thereof; operating -handles on either end of said arms; and a bottom for said body hinged to one of said arms and resting upon the other, substantially as described.
2. A device' of "the class described colnprising a body; two supporting arms for said body, each of said arms being shaped to embrace said body and pivoted to either end'. thereof; operatinglhandles on either end of said arms; a bottom for said body hinged to one of said arms and resting upon the other; and locking means for holding said arms in closed position, scribed. 3. A device of the class described com-I arms for said body, each of said arms being shaped to embrace said body and pivoted to the ends of members 1 and 2 at the pivotal substantially as deprising an adjustable body; two supporting either endthereof; operating-"handles on either end of said arms; an adjustable bottom for said body hinged to one of said arms land resting on the other; andy locking means for holding said arms in`closed position, Substantially as-describedg-y riti"` l4., A device ofrt'he- `class described com.-
jprising a vbody formed of tWo. substantially U-sihaped sheet-Inetal members adapted to form the sides and ends thereof andf'having l their end portions overllapping and adjustably secured together; two supporting arms for said body, each consisting of an iron ipe in substantifill v U-form embracing the ottomof said bo y at one side with its lirnb's pivoted to opposite ends of one of said bod members; divergent handle portions on sai arms; an vadjustablebottom hinged on the bottom-embracing portion of oneof said arms vand resting on that of the other; and an' adjustable upwardly breakingself-lock- 15 ing brace connecting one end of s'aid arms -above their pivots,.substantia11y as de- THOMAS B. WALSH.
